I just re-read this gem by Lord Hannan. It has been a few years since I looked at it.
Incredible Stuff.
The myopia is one thing.
But the way literally every global development has been misjudged.

Starmer has to go, and the sooner the better. I'm a soft left social democrat, so should be his core support. The problem is his "rivers of blood" speech, attack on the disabled & pro-Brexit rhetoric just give the message that Farage is right. He's lost the left & pushed the right to Reform. #LABOUR

Immigration is a net contributor to the UK economy. The only difference in academic studies is by how much. Pass it on.

It’s official - “Nigel Farage is right, don’t vote for him” is a demonstrably awful strategy for Labour. Boosts salience of immigration, costs votes on the left, doesn’t persuade any voters on right (why would they accept a crap knock-off when they can have the original?)
We have a paper on how Labour's strategy is disastrous.

There's an exclusive coverage in @newstatesman.com

@mrjamesob.bsky.social Wouldn't the best compromise be to expand Luton airport? Far easier to access from the Midlands and North and still close to London for your imaginary American friends

@mrjamesob.bsky.social Is Labour's best chance if winning the next election to make it about Brexit? Accept that Farage has the reactionary 25%. Pin Brexit on him. Say that winter fuel, PIP etc were forced by the economic realities of Brexit. Vote Labour to rejoin SM & CU to rebuild UK. #BREXIT

@teamlabouruk.bsky.social People vote Labour, join Labour, become Labour councillors, and become Labour MPs because they believe in social justice. Keir Starmer must understand that ultimately, party stakeholders will not allow policies that make life intolerable for the vulnerable. #Labour

@teamlabouruk.bsky.social You simply cannot go ahead with the cruel plan to cut disability benefits. It is immoral and will destroy the party. You will be unable to govern without your core support.

People wonder why I’m so angry at Labour.

It’s because their kamikaze mission to appease the far right by being continuity Tory instead of the change they promised, is haemorrhaging support (obviously) and will result in Farage as PM.

I mean, for fucks sake. Sort your shit out and stop it now 👇🏼

Labour's immigration announcement today is a reflection of the paucity of honest debate by BOTH political parties over the last decade on this issue.

Labour has never made a counter-argument, or been honest about economic cost of immigration curbs, so it's stuck making Tory/Reform arguments 1/n

This chart from Immigration White Paper illustrates quality of government's underlying "analysis."

1. Numbers are completely wrong (in fact non-EU employment in health/care rose by over 100K).

2. Doesn't say what time period this is.

3. Footnote to source says data is from OECD (it's from HMRC)

I hope that Labour now stop trying to appease Reform. The way forward is to consistently point out their propaganda lies and highlight what effects Reform policies would have on people's lives. They need to relax the fiscal rules, drive through a social democratic programme and make lives better.

Right wing populist politics has been so damaging and so brain-achingly tedious this last decade. Look at where we are as a result. Far poorer, weaker, more divided, isolated from the EU and trying not to piss off an egomaniacal lunatic in the White House. Sovereignty at its most vulnerable.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social Trump is trying to ramp up inflation. The Fed will respond by hiking interest rates. Trump will make a fortune in interest from his billions. He'll also bring in emergency tax rules to 'stimulate' the economy & exempt billionaires from tax. It's about making money for Trump.

@labourlewis.bsky.social sounding like a 21st century Nye Bevan. Clive is making a lot of sense these days.
Since 2008 the ideology of privatisation has been faltering under the weight of its own contradictions, yet its grip on British politics is vice-like.

Austerity, exploitation, corporate price-gouging, still treated not as choices, but as inevitabilities.

There are alternatives. #OurWaterOurWay
