Background + sprite animation (the ship is now pre-rendered) and... tunnels ! I think I can add more gameplay elements and stay at 30fps, there is hope, the megadrive is a beast :o

So mayyybe it's possible to render in 4 colors, it takes 20% more cpu but two palettes of 16 colors are then free for sprites and background #SGDK #SegaMegadrive

Only 2 colors, but finally some stable 30fps 3d without line-doubling (256x128 or 320x128 pixels) on stock Sega Megadrive :) The bottleneck is the height of the polygons. I exhausted all my ideas so I don't think I can do faster at this resolution.

The project came about because one of the devs was messing with @stephane-d.bsky.social's SGDK and they decided to give them space to make it. Though it was announced April 1, it's a proper game and comes with a downloadable emulator executable! I appreciate how seriously the manual treats the game.

One of the many reasons #SGDK is such a valuable Genesis game dev tool is its automation of creating multi-sprite objects for characters. I recently got a new version of Blastem that lets me see exactly how sprites are structured and it's very interesting 🤯
