My thoughts below! Marked sensitive for spoilers.
I'm conflicted. In many ways it was better than I was expecting, and I definitely enjoyed myself while watching it. On the other hand, there were so many things that could have easily been changed that would have made it so much better - the big ones being the sound and lighting. I'll start with the positives. Cynthia was fantastic - I can't think of anyone that could have played Elphaba better. The orchestrations were gorgeous. And the movie was surprisingly well paced considering it's so long. I can't think of anything I'd cut (except Sentimental Man, but I can't begrudge Jeff Goldblum his moment). Unfortunately, it was difficult to enjoy the brilliant orchestrations most of the time because the sound mixing was so poor. It's most egregious when characters are mixing between speaking and singing because the sudden difference was time they switch is so jarring. And then there's the lighting. Unlike most modern films that suffer from the issue of too little lighting, this film suffers from too much. Or should I say, too much in the wrong places. Throughout the movie there's only ever two kinds of lighting used - a bright backlight that casts a shadow over anything in the foreground, or completely flat lighting that does nothing to distinguish the principle characters. The biggest offender for this is the Ozdust ballroom scene in Dancing Through Life, where absolutely nothing is done to separate Elphaba from the rest of the partygoers. Even her green skin disappears into the wash of blue lighting. A single spotlight could have done so much for this film, and I'm confused as to what John M. Chu was thinking with the lighting choices he made.
