Pope meets artist whose work reveals how God touches brokenness
An ancient Japanese art form repairs broken vessels with gold, not hiding the damage. The tradition illustrates Pope Francis' call to "to go to the margins" because they are also places of possibility...

Another story about my brother. He noticed an empty sizeable planter outside a small food pantry he frequents. He checked with the owners and then planted potato plants in it. Last week, after the freeze, he pulled up the plants and added them to the pantry. 1/

And hopefully an occasional horse ride.
Asked how he spends his time at Castel Gandolfo, he responded: "a bit of reading, a bit of work, there are correspondences every day, phone calls, important matters, urgent ones. And then a bit of tennis and swimming pool.”

I love this story about my brother, who is in transitional housing, almost in possession of the key to his own apartment (!). He loves to go to breakfast on Mondays at this church that makes French toast, eggs, sausage, bacon, and grits for the homeless population. 1/

"While the entire Church rejoices and exults, it is especially to you, dear brothers and sisters, that I want to proclaim the irrevocable words of the Lord Jesus himself: “Dilexi te, I have loved you” (Rev 3:9). "

I love how he continues with what was so much Francis' heart.
Pope Leo at lunch with 1,300 cherished guests: “Let us also ask the Lord's blessing on the many people suffering from violence, war, and hunger; and may we today celebrate this feast in a spirit of fraternity.”

Trying to get started over at Substack. I have always loved sharing a poem on Sunday, a day when I have more time to just enjoy a poem.

They weren’t taking the houses, they were building the houses.
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

Pope Leo putting "his money where his mouth is." #DilexiTe
Pope Leo XIV has inaugurated the operation of a modern outpatient clinic for the poor and homeless—the St. Martin's Clinic. It is located in the Vatican under Bernini's colonnade. It will help diagnose and treat the most common diseases affecting people living in poverty.

I have been "slow reading" Mako Fujimura's marvelous new book, Art Is, and this morning, I had to stop to ponder at one point in his section on kintsugi. Some of you may not know that the catalyst for Mako and I meeting with Pope Francis in 2022 was to present him with a kintsugi piece. 1/

VATICAN: This afternoon, Pope Leo met with 15 people from Belgium who were victims of abuse by clergy when they were minors. The meeting was held in an atmosphere of closeness with deep and painful listening and dialogue; it lasted for almost three hours, then ended with an intense moment of prayer.

This series is based on my research on people seeking to instrumentalize the Catholic Church to serve wealth and power. I needed a co-writer to help me connect the dots in ways that make sense to people who aren't already following the various players.

"the wisdom of waiting"

“An Eastern Christian saw a photo of Father de Foucauld sitting on my desk and said, ‘This face is an icon.’ It’s true. We too must become icons of God’s mystery, more transparent, showing forth eschatology by placing ourselves at the heart of the cross and resurrection.” — Marie-Joseph Le Guillou
