Allegedly retired journalist who keeps coming back for more. Love animals, travel, books. Community journalism is my ride or die. Caffeinated by coffee and curiosity.
Should a journalist live where they work? After 40 years, I've reached a conclusion. sandyquadrosbowles.substack.com/p/does-your-...
Does your area code make you a better journalist?
Juggling the town you live in with the one you cover requires a tricky balance

I've created my first post on Substack. Looking to share tips I've learned, often the hard way, through years in community journalism.

So happy for #ThePitt winning Best Drama Series. Best drama in years. Captures the heroes, villains of today's medical world. Katherine LaNasa flawlessly depicts the challenges nurses face every patient every day. Nurses are the touchstones of modern medicine.

This is so true. People often say that to me when I mention that I am a journalist. We are blessed to work with words and to get paid for our creativity.
i am so used to minimizing my accomplishments and comparing myself to peers with award-winning movies and bestselling books that i forget sometimes that to an average person with a job they at best tolerate, being a writer is an exotic and interesting thing

Time has passed and countless tragedies have captured our attention but let us not forget the thousands who lost their lives on that horrific day 24 years ago. We can never let their memories be lost. They are all a part of us.

The cruelest cut: They renewed Dexter Original Sin only to tape it to the kill table later. The Ice Truck Killer has nothing on network executives.

I have been a journalist, now semi-retired, for 43 years. And yet with every assignment I still worry. What if they won't talk? What if I don't understand what the meeting is about? OK fellow journos: Is this normal? Funny thing is, most assignments go just fine. #nervousinthenewsroom

Let's hope journalism makes a comeback well beyond the race track. www.nbcnews.com/sports/horse...
In comeback, Journalism wins 150th Preakness Stakes
The horse had 6-5 odds heading into the second leg of the Triple Crown.

An interesting take on news deserts and their connection, if any, to Trump support. No matter what your politics, you have to agree that local news makes for a more informed public. Proud to offer local news to Middleboro, Lakeville
In blue-collar Fall River, Mass., a lack of reliable news coincides with the rise of Trump
By Alexa Coultoff FALL RIVER, Mass. — Keith Thibault likes to say he “runs a news department of one” out of the TV production studio at Bristol Community College. When Thibault was growing up in th…

On Monday, after Jarren Duran’s suicide attempt was revealed, Samaritans received triple the number of text messages to their “Hey Sam” teen support text line when compared to the daily average in March.

Samaritans also fielded more than twice as many calls as compared to the previous Monday.

How will those penguins pay a tariff if no one is there to scrape barnacles off them?

Atlantic Monthly editor Goldberg didn't share he was on the infamous group chat til plans being discussed happened. He kept some names private for security reasons. He represented my fellow journos w. integrity, decency. Hope people remember this when they chant "fake news.'' He's the real deal.

What's up with all these strange images of barnacles being removed from penguins, seals, walruses. Don't people realize that barnacles don't attach to them and even if they did these animals would never sit still for the "rescuers.'' An AI fail that is just creepy but seems to be everywhere

So refreshing and important to hear a political figure advocate for local news. All politicians, no matter what party, should do the same.
It was an honor to join the Minnesota Newspaper Association Convention and speak about the importance of local news.

We're lucky to have a paper in all 87 counties. They make sure every community in Minnesota is informed, connected, and well-served.

Good news: AP is starting a local news program. If all politics is local, that goes double for news. Local news is the best way the average citizen can interact with journalists, see we are, almost always, hard-working people trying to keep residents informed. Thanks @dankennedy.net for the update.
