This week: Ranking the top 20 most important people in the Red Sox organization. My formula was based on their importance to the team's success:

Tough day for former Sox/Woo Sox:

The Astros DFA'd Kaleb Ort to open a roster spot for Tatsuya Imai. The Twins also dropped Ryan Fitzgerald.

LSU could have saved a lot of money and hired Pete Golding.

Sean McDonough was great on Ole Miss-Georgia.

The average margin of victory in the college football playoffs so far has been 17.9 points. Only one of the first eight games (Miami 10-7 over A&M) has been decided by one score.

Thanks to everyone who read the Globe and supported our coverage of the Red Sox and MLB in 2025.

It’s not something we take for granted. It’s great to meet so many people — at Fenway and on the road — who care about the team and the paper.

Looking forward to spring training.

Continuing our “Around the Horn” series on the Red Sox’ roster, taking a crack at the hardest-to-predict unit of any team: the bullpen. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/12/29/s...
Evaluating the Red Sox bullpen: Aroldis Chapman and Garrett Whitlock are a dominant late-inning pair - The Boston Globe
Outside of Aroldis Chapman and Garrett Whitlock, the Red Sox have plenty of questions about how their bullpen will look in 2026.

Don’t you kick the point there and take your chances at home in OT? Defense was dominating, you had the momentum, etc. Interesting call.

Two incompletions, Drake? Clean that up.

Nothing says “Jets” like getting a taunting penalty down 28-3 in the first half.

On vacation this week and @alexspeier.bsky.social handled the Sunday baseball notes. He spoke to Craig Breslow about why the Red Sox have made so many trades this offseason and during his tenure as chief baseball officer:

Just call him Trader Craig, as Breslow has become an eager dealmaker as head of Red Sox baseball ops - The Boston Globe
Since he was hired by the Red Sox in October 2023, Breslow has completed 44 trades involving players on the 40-man roster.

Kristian Campbell wrapped up his winter ball stint in Puerto Rico last night. A look at the adjustments he worked on while playing for Caguas, aided by a constant rotation of Sox coaches. “As an organization, we’re making sure we take care of him.” www.bostonglobe.com/2025/12/24/s...
Kristian Campbell’s winter ball stint is over, with Red Sox committed to his growth ahead of second year - The Boston Globe
The Red Sox coaching staff worked hard to fix a hole in Campbell's swing, as he hopes to make an impact at the MLB level next season.

Willson Contreras is among the most consistent righthanded hitters in MLB, joining Judge and Alonso as the only RHH w/3 straight years of 120+ OPSes. His addition is a solid start for the Red Sox - but one more bat is needed this offseason. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/12/22/s...
With Willson Contreras in the fold, Red Sox still looking for one more bat - The Boston Globe
Sunday night's trade for the first baseman was an important first step in reshaping their lineup. But there’s more to do.

Highlights of Breslow's Zoom:

* Roster is "incomplete." Another bat is a priority.
* They see Contreras at 1B. Catching doesn't seem to be on the table.
* Talked to Casas after the Contreras deal. Said "there's an opportunity for him to impact games." Needs to stay healthy.
* Bullpen needs work.

Good for Rob Refsnyder getting $6.25M from Seattle. More than he made the last three years. He’ll be good for the Mariners, too. Kind of personality that brings players together.

The package, as reported by Jeff Passan, of Hunter Dobbins, Yhoiker Fajardo, and Blake Aita offers the Cardinals a nice balance -- a big league-ready starter in Dobbins, a pitcher who cracked my Red Sox top 10 in Fajardo (who looked like a solid, back-end starter in the FCL and A-ball), and...

Contreras is a good addition to the lineup. But they still need another hitter.

Multiple sources confirm that the Red Sox are acquiring Willson Contreras from the Cardinals. Like Sonny Gray, Contreras received some financial concessions -- his guarantee increasing from $41.5 million to $42.5 million, with a chance to earn $55 million if a 2028 option is exercised.

Sunday Baseball Notes now posted at BostonGlobe.com.

Leading off this week: The Yankees hope to get more out of Ben Rice by keeping him at first base. Plus Garrett Crochet was actually unlucky last season, the Braves rebuilt in a hurry and much more:

Dodgers will pay $169.3 million in luxury taxes for 2025. That's more than the payroll of 12 teams.

Red Sox were dinged $1.49 million. They finished with the seventh highest luxury-tax payroll ($248.8), third highest in the American League.

The Red Sox and Rockies are the only teams not to have signed a free agent to a major league contract.

The Nationals and Twins have not done so officially but have signings in the works. The Rockies have a decent excuse as they have a new president of baseball ops.

Quite a surprise.

The Padres coaching staff is awash with former Red Sox: Nick Punto (infield coach), Kevin Plawecki (catching coach), and Allen Craig (special assistant).

They listed 18 coaches. One for every 1.4 players. 😀
