the president does not actually have the power to fire a university president or a museum director, but if elites simply roll over under pressure, then effectively he does

There's something really interesting going on here methodologically in Justice Jackson's Medina v. Planned Parenthood dissent. You can see it in one footnote.

In short, Jackson is emphasizing that Black Americans are part of the original "public" about which "originalists" should be concerned.

Oof, I hadn't heard this until now. What a loss.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Clifford Lynch, a visionary leader in the field of networked information & libraries, and the esteemed executive director of CNI since 1997. Read more about Cliff and the indelible mark he left on the IT, higher ed, and library communities.

After not one but two shelter-in-place events this week (which came after a shooting at an area grocery store), I am now thinking about what sort of food & comfort items to stock in our offices. We have few windows and are behind a locked door, so it is a good place for students &c. in a crisis.

Holy guacamole! I had no idea school bands were allowed to vibe like this. That red-shirted flute is absolutely rocking out, and even the clarinets are looking kinda cool-adjacent. (Yeah, I messed around with clarinets as a kid. Yeah, they can sound cool, but you WILL look awkward.)

Useful thread, noting that (as usual) this is neither a "the little guy out-thought the big guys, yipee" narrative nor a true open-source offering.
Ok, quick thread on why DeepSeek is blowing up assumptions about LLMs and maybe the whole (U.S.) AI industry. DeepSeek is an AI lab funded by a Chinese hedge fund, their AI code is open source, meaning freely available to use, which most big U.S. models (aside from Meta’s) are not. That’s the start…

Query: Anyone know where I can find additional information on photographer Freda Leinwand (1932-2012)? I am asking on behalf of one of my students who wants to write on her for a thesis. We know about materials at Harvard. We wondered if there were additional books or theses written on her.
