Alfred “Alfie” Date, recognized as Australia’s oldest man, spent his final years knitting tiny sweaters. During an oil spill near Phillip Island in 2001, 96% of the 438 affected penguins were successfully released back into the wild, thanks in part to the use of these protective sweaters.

This is progress, as far as it goes. But land-burning should be banned here for all purposes other than firebreaks and emergencies. There should be no burning by grouse estates, and no "swaling" on Dartmoor and Exmoor (torching regenerating woodland for sheep pasture).
