Enjoyed Ned drawing connections here. On the feedback etc., I remember when Magnetic Fields’ Distortion came out (in 2008) and Stephin Merritt saying “Psychocandy is the last significant event in popular music production. That’s the last thing I’ve heard that sounds blaringly original.”
And here's my last major piece for the year at @thequietus.com, celebrating the 40th anniversary of one hell of an album. Finding a slightly different way in to talking about this astounding debut by the #JesusAndMaryChain was part of the challenge, but it was a great one to tackle.
Four decades back a major label released a debut album that sounded like almost nothing on earth while still sounding incredibly familiar. Our man in San Francisco Ned Raggett takes stock of it all

Happy Birthday to the JAMC's Psychocandy, which turns 40 today!

On this day in 1985, Spies Like Us was released. Hardly Paul McCartney’s finest moment, the single was one of the many things from which his reputation needed to recover in the following 90s era. #OffTheGroundBook #PaulMcCartney 🎶

It's funny what posts kick off on here

Obviously if you think it's worth it, pay it

If you don't, don't

I had the briefest interest in going to see Iron Maiden - for very old times sake. I loved them when I was verrrrry young. The ticket is £148. Can you even imagine spending that to see a band play 😂

There are so many great lines (or half-lines, if that’s what they are) in this experimental, intoxicating and rather-rude-in-places novel. “Art should be like a hand grenade thrown through an open window.” #booksky @whiterabbitbks.bsky.social

I’m not a great one for that whole, you know, maybe it was too many of that. What are you on about? It’s great. It sold. It’s the bloody JR Moores’ Off The Ground: Paul McCartney in the 1990s. Shut up.
November 14, 2025 at 1:32 PM
Saw a criticism of Off The Ground that was basically: “I was expecting The McCartney Legacy: 90s Volume. This wasn’t it.” That’ll be on its way. The idea wasn’t to get in before it. What would be the point?

It's the beginning of my 6th or so listen in as many days since I bought it. Was reminded about them - and spurned on to finally get around to taking the plunge - by reading Electric Wizards by @spinal-bap.bsky.social

Personal highlight of the new Wings book is Paul’s story that he nearly went to meet Bob Marley when he was in London in the mid 70’s but was too stoned to go.

Does Tintin count as a superhero? (No fewer superpowers than Batman.)
This raises an important question! Which 90's animated superhero series had the BEST theme song?

What better way to celebrate Halloween than an all-new digital-only single?

"Hey Zombie" was recorded late last year with Phil Booth and Robin Newman. It’s pay what you like on bandcamp right now.
