Seen a few folk posting about the first record they’ve played in full in 2026. Rather inadvertently, my first plays were my two favourite #U2 albums: “Achtung Baby” (1991) and “Zooropa” (1993). Not massively into the rest, but absolutely love both these U2 LPs: the “Kid A” & “Amnesiac” of the 90s. 🫶🏻

I’m not a huge Manics fan as I only really like the first three but, tell you what - Gold Against The Soul is a *fantastic* record. I love it! Big, beefy, daft. Sheer 1993, too. Why is it never mentioned? V.underrated.

#AOTY2025 Day 29/LP 2: #DivideAndDissolve “Insatiable”. Now effectively Takiaya Reed’s solo project, D+D are more proof that Melbourne/Naarm is the world’s hottest musical city. For me at least. This is early weird, eerie Melvins noise drone-doom with overlapping sax & baroque classical interludes.

#AOTY2025 Day 28/Album 1: #VoidCeremony “Abditum”. Without a doubt one of my favourite metal bands of the 2020s. While nothing has hit me quite as hard as “Entropic Reflections…” (2020), this is still a mighty fine LP. Leaner, more economic song structures, but still inventive and catchy. Solos = 🔥

#AOTY2025 Day 28/Album 1: #VoidCeremony “Abditum”. Without a doubt one of my favourite metal bands of the 2020s. While nothing has hit me quite as hard as “Entropic Reflections…” (2020), this is still a mighty fine LP. Leaner, more economic song structures, but still inventive and catchy. Solos = 🔥

#AOTY2025 Day 27/Album 2: #EthelCain “Perverts”. I may owe this one to @stephenroddy.bsky.social. I knew the name, but next to nothing else. Gave it a listen and was ABSOLUTELY STUNNED. I WAS NOT prepared for how much I would love this album. Expansive, exploratory, immersive, singular. Masterpiece!

#AOTY2025 Day 27/Album 1: #Floating “Hesitating Lights”. I was late to the party on Sweden’s Floating. This is very tasty death metal with a really interesting post-punk slant. Can hear a hell of a lot of early Killing Joke in there, plus some John McGeoch in the 🎸! Not many doing this this well. 🔥
