Pro tip: If you're autistic, you might find that complicated conversations go better over text.

Texting gives you time to choose your words, process your emotions, and prevents allistic people from disregarding your words to focus solely on your body language.

Do not let them manufacture consent to sacrifice your health for profit yet again.

Every COVID infection risks developing “underlying medical conditions.” It’s unsettlingly common. The research is grim and growing. So is fascism.

Protect yourself & others. Wear an n95. Give/get mask mutual aid:

“Do your own risk assessment” doesn’t work with an airborne virus that is as contagious as Covid

Disabled & covid cautious ppl are trying hard. We’re friggin exhausted. We’re always masking, many of us are mostly isolated except for healthcare settings

Wear a mask & make public spaces accessible!
“Well but people need to do their own risk assessment” no, we’re done with this too. If you see a person in a mask, or they’ve done their own risk assessment and you are a danger to their health. Be respectful and put on a damn mask.

This is another example of disabled people being the proverbial canaries in the coal mine.

We’ve been screaming for years about the dangers of supply chain issues and medication shortages.

Grateful to Canada Healthwatch for keeping a close eye on the BC case of H5N1. A 16 year old in critical condition is NOT something to be taken lightly.

I worry that if this has pandemic potential - it’ll be impossible to control.

Anti-mask and anti-vaxx rhetoric have done untold amounts of damage
We're watching many things this week, but there's one story that's moving particularly fast — Canada’s first domestically acquired case of H5N1.

Let’s support people through the transition so it doesn’t take too many spoons. Let’s make sure people know how to find us.
Starter packs, custom feeds, tools like sky bridge - these are all HUGE helps.

We CAN do this - but we need to stick together. Now more than ever. /end

First - let’s not shame or blame people for their choices. Let’s also be willing to recognize the writing is on the wall with respect to twitter and the sooner we rebuild elsewhere the better off we will be.

Let’s work on finding ways to make alternatives more accessible. /9

People’s reasons for staying and for going are all valid.

I think the reason folks are upset is because community is fracturing - and we depend on community for our very survival (not to mention comfort in these isolating times).

So what can we do? /8

The removal of the block function left many people feeling unsafe and stress is terrible for our health

Likewise the considerable uptick in threats, cruelty and trolling is too much for many people (I put myself in that category) /7

They may also be too sick to learn a new platform and/or feel like none of them provide the same type of service and community.

On the flip side - those who are leaving may be doing so due to punishing algos, issue with ownership and/or safety and trolling /6

I can understand the reasons for staying. Sunk cost fallacy is huge.
People have put a lot of precious time and energy into building a following. They may or may not be reliant on it for a source of income or mutual aid.

They may be afraid to lose community and access to information /5

I don’t say that for pity - just to remind people that many of us spend the only spoons we have on trying to educate, inform and support others.

Trying to do it in multiple places takes time and energy that many of us don’t have.

It’s not sustainable. /4

I stay because I’m acutely aware of the pain of losing community. Of feeling abandoned. Of being too sick to contemplate ANY change and wanting to cling to the status quo.

I don’t want anyone to feel left behind - so I’m trying to straddle multiple places. I’m exhausted /3

Personally - I’m struggling to stay there. I don’t want to be there anymore. It’s become too toxic and the majority of my engagements are threats, slurs, insults or bots.

It takes a tremendous amount of spoons to sift through them to try and get to the genuine ones /2

It’s come to my attention that some disabled & chronically ill patients are being shamed or criticized for leaving Twitter.

Can we collectively take a breath & agree not to turn on one another?

Most disability advocates are sick themselves - shame & stress cause harm 🧵/1

When you’re chronically ill - your baseline is everything. You will protect it at all costs.

Non disabled people can’t understand how much independence and autonomy means to us. Whatever small amount we have left - is priceless.

That’s why we don’t take necessary risks. We know what’s at stake.

Sorry I know my profile has stayed kinda bare for a while, I'm still slowly making the transition from Twitter.

Following OK accounts because I'm also from there, I know I don't have any indications of it anywhere.

I'm just going to get the awkward first post out of the way.

I would like to start replacing Twitter soon because...I don't even know if toxic is even strong enough of a descriptor for what it's become since he who shall not be named took over.
