Today I learned (thanks, NPR) that from 1875 to 1975, there were more than 6,000 commercial shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. The publicity of song led to safety standard changes and there has not been a single commercial wreck since then.

In school we had WW2 veterans come in for a history project. Our teacher spent ages before telling us not to ask any disrespectful questions, and that some of them had traumatic experiences. First old chap's opening gambit was "right, lads, I guess you want to know how many nazis I shot?"

It was 1:30 am and I was stopped at the red on Holland/Dover, no other cars in the square
Saw in the rear view someone running like hell out of Statue Park and the guy following with what looked like a yardstick with cardboard hilt
He saw me and advanced; the red light didn't matter anymore
