everything is so shitty, read this story about a genuinely good man who saw he had an opportunity to save millions of lives and threw himself into doing so. the world is full of heroes like him.

Anything. Absolutely anything. Anything, no matter how small, is more than nothing.

I'm not teaching my grad course 'Civil Resistance: How It Works' this semester. But here is an abridged version of the course schedule, readings, and films I used the last time I taught it (in 2022). Just in case it's useful. drive.google.com/file/d/14RRJ...

This is a sewing pattern. It is also a page from a late 14th century manuscript that is one of two primary sources for an important Icelandic saga (Sturlunga saga), but that was probably not important to the 17th century person who really needed a sewing pattern.

I would like to welcome recent followers by reposting this thread, which encapsulates what I love so much about library collections: the sheer fucking weirdness of the universe of books if you just take the time to look. 📚

You do not have to consume every single tiny piece of bad news in order to be a good person. It’s ok to miss things. Traumatizing yourself isn’t the same as activism. Bearing witness to the point that you’re paralyzed with fear and horror and fury isn’t going to help us get through this.
Remember their goal is to terrorize us. And social media is a fantastic way to spread terror. We don’t have to help them.
Based on the vibes of my timeline today I’m feeling like the next two weeks are probably gonna be a really good time to reduce social media use as much as possible. Because YIKES.

My best advice to all of us internet dwellers (including myself) is: go physically see your friends as often as you can. Speaking via text or chat or voice message or FaceTime just isn’t the same. Don’t convince yourself it is. Go share that serotonin in person.

I really wish people would stop telling me how I’m allowed to feel about finding out one of my favorite authors is a piece of shit. sorry I’m disappointed bc I thought he was a decent person bc he spent 40 years in the public eye cultivating the image of being a decent person. definitely my bad :)

I think all the time about the interviewer who asked Meryl Streep “how did you not know about Weinstein” and she was like “I didn’t know because he NEEDED me not to know”

it isn’t a character flaw to have been deceived by someone who is a deceit expert cultivating the cover of your faith & goodwill
Whenever someone is outed as problematic, there are a billion people who need to see, in sky-writing, "you didn't know, that's ok, but now you do, act accordingly."

No one expects you to be psychic or in on every whisper network, and folks inferring so aren't being fair. WHISPER networks. WHISPER.

Also - please spend time deciding how you are going to engage with the content this administration and the complicit media are going to be putting out from here on out.

Our nervous systems are precious resources and keeping them in a hyper-reactive state is BAD-real bad. We need to be intentional.

In this fascist era, we already have people incapable of celebrating progress or positive development and who reflexively greet any instance of it with suspicion and cynicism: fascists. Do what fascists can’t do: Celebrate progress.
like please god can we kill that Twitterpilled reply mode where anyone being happy about ANYTHING is a credulous moron who’s taken their eye off the ball who needs you personally to correct them

Seen a few folks astonished by my lack of support for ChatGPT and similar. Because AI, right?

Yeah, no. What we have right now is glorified autocorrect. Glorified autocorrect that takes the energy of an entire city to do what it does, plus half of Lake Erie to cool down while it's doing it.
