This account is for me to talk about vehicles of all sorts, the kind that drive on the surface of the Earth, or that drive on the surface of Mars. The kind that travel between the planets, and the kind that transport millions of people through cities.
I've been driving my aunt's Bolt EUV around town for errands the past couple of weeks. I get an average of about 5 miles/kWh when driving it. That's equivalent to about 170 miles/gallon if you only measure energy use by the vehicle. It's even better if you do full cost accounting.

Starting a 1200 mile round trip road trip today in my #EV #Lightning. It's across the Mojave Desert. I've done this trip dozens of times. Have had fewer problems in the EV than in a gasser.

These stupid mother fuckers are going to close hundreds of nursing homes, homeless shelters, abuse shelters, and transitional housing for hundreds of thousands of Americans including veterans, seniors, women, and children. These fucking monsters. Flynn is such a piece of shit.

This is why Congressional Democrats should be breaking down the doors of whatever facility manages payments and seizing control of the federal treasury because people are going to die as a result of the budget they passed and the money they allocated not being distributed according to the law.
NEW: The board president of a small WV nonprofit says they haven't received their HHS funding since the Trump/Musk budget freeze. They had to lay off 3 of 5 employees on Friday. An 86-yr-old woman is counting on them to take her dialysis tomorrow. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

"But you can't road trip in an EV."
Please don't tell my EVs that. With >60k miles on the, 75% of which are road trips, I really don't want them to know they're no good for road trips.

"But we tow with our truck."
So?
This job was several 10-12-hour days of 110+ ºF AZ desert heat. Each day, I towed the tractor >50 miles to the site, ran tools off the inverter, had meetings in the truck with the AC blasting, towed the tractor home. Left w/70% on the battery, returned w/30%.

I use the Lighting to power tools around the property. We put in a small orchard over the summer w/a fence to keep the deer & elk out. There's a layer of limestone a ~2 feet below the surface, so I drove the fence posts with my jackhammer (I came back and fixed the weird post in the foreground).

This past summer, we needed work done on our electrical service panel. We also needed to work for the 8+ hours that was going to take. So I plugged in the Lightning. We used <5% for the 10 hours it took.
We didn't bother with V2G equipment, just plugged in some extension cords.

People think EVs are more expensive, but pay for themselves w/in a few yrs. I ran a Monte Carlo simulation with 200,000 runs for TCO, incl purchase, depreciation, maintenance, cost of energy, miles/yr, yrs owned, etc. In 89.5% of runs, the Lightning is cheaper than its ICE equivalent within 2-3 yrs.

Agreed.

We've put 60k miles combined on our '22 Mustang & '23 Lightning. Best vehicles ever.

Lightning powered our home while having some electrical work done.

If I charge during super-off-peak, it costs $4.60 to fill the Lightning and $3.21 to fill the Mustang. For up to 450 miles around town.
If you can, you should buy an EV right now. Especially one that can provide backup power.

Thats all Rivians, Kias, and Hyundais, the Leaf, the ID4, the Lightning, and a few others. No Teslas or Lucids except the CT. I doubt there are a lot of cybertruck buyers here, though.

In the 4 years since it was introduced #MustangMach-E drivers drove ~twice the daily distance of the average US driver. They didn't come close to using its range (270-312 miles, depending on configuration) on their daily commute.
I do a 1/mo 1100 round trip drive w/no problems.
February 2, 2025 at 5:35 AM
I had reserved a #ScoutMotors #EV in Oct. We're putting 1300 miles/month on our EVs & may need to replace the #MachE by 2027.

But the stupidity of the new administration makes it unlikely we'll buy a new car in the next 15 years & I'll need that $100 in the near term.

Canceled the reservation.

While we’re dickering around pretending we don’t subsidize the fossil fuel industry and snatching back little scraps from the EV industry, China is dominating the EV world. In 10 years, US mfgs will be making slightly-improved Model-As and the rest of the world will be driving spaceships on wheels.

Before we buy a car, I do a TCO analysis. I run a Monte Carlo simulation with ~1M runs. Params: maintenance, $/energy, miles/yr, yrs owned, depreciation, etc.
When we replaced our Tacoma w/a Lightning, I compared with an ICE F-150. In ~2.5 yrs, Lightning TCO is lower, 89.5% of the time.

“Well, Trump won and now he’s gonna destroy Gaza.”

“Yep. We’re paying the price for the Democrats’ incompetence.”

“‘We?’ The Gazans are paying the price, not us”

Pause.

“I needed to make a statement.”

One of the reasons I do not and will never own a brand-t EV is because of the behavior of that brand’s CEO. We’ve known about this behavior for decades—today’s hand gesture is nothing new, all those stupid bumper stickers not withstanding.

In 2002, we bought our first new car & first hybrid-electric, a 2002 Toyota Prius. It was fantastic but we only drove it for a few years before a family member asked if we would sell it to them. We did and bought a Gen-2 Prius. Thus began our electrification journey.
