EV Driver
@spaceevdriver.bsky.social
This account is for me to talk about vehicles of all sorts, the kind that drive on the surface of the Earth, or that drive on the surface of Mars. The kind that travel between the planets, and the kind that transport millions of people through cities.
Please don't spread this myth around my EVs. They don't know they're supposed to be no good for frequent road trips and I'd like to keep it that way. I take one or the other on an 1100 mile road trip every month. We've taken them on ~45k miles of road trips. I'd hate for them to believe this myth.

"But you can't road trip in an EV."
Please don't tell my EVs that. With >60k miles on the, 75% of which are road trips, I really don't want them to know they're no good for road trips.

"But we tow with our truck."
So?
This job was several 10-12-hour days of 110+ ºF AZ desert heat. Each day, I towed the tractor >50 miles to the site, ran tools off the inverter, had meetings in the truck with the AC blasting, towed the tractor home. Left w/70% on the battery, returned w/30%.

I use the Lighting to power tools around the property. We put in a small orchard over the summer w/a fence to keep the deer & elk out. There's a layer of limestone a ~2 feet below the surface, so I drove the fence posts with my jackhammer (I came back and fixed the weird post in the foreground).

This past summer, we needed work done on our electrical service panel. We also needed to work for the 8+ hours that was going to take. So I plugged in the Lightning. We used <5% for the 10 hours it took.
We didn't bother with V2G equipment, just plugged in some extension cords.

We've used our Lightning to power the house, field equipment, to run tools on the ranch, charge power tools, to camp. And it's cheaper than its ICE equivalent in the long term. My Monte Carlo simulation with 200,000 runs comparing costs. In 89.5% of the runs, the Lightning is cheaper w/in 2-3 yrs.

People think EVs are more expensive, but pay for themselves w/in a few yrs. I ran a Monte Carlo simulation with 200,000 runs for TCO, incl purchase, depreciation, maintenance, cost of energy, miles/yr, yrs owned, etc. In 89.5% of runs, the Lightning is cheaper than its ICE equivalent within 2-3 yrs.

In the 4 years since it was introduced #MustangMach-E drivers drove ~twice the daily distance of the average US driver. They didn't come close to using its range (270-312 miles, depending on configuration) on their daily commute.
I do a 1/mo 1100 round trip drive w/no problems.

Before we buy a car, I do a TCO analysis. I run a Monte Carlo simulation with ~1M runs. Params: maintenance, $/energy, miles/yr, yrs owned, depreciation, etc.
When we replaced our Tacoma w/a Lightning, I compared with an ICE F-150. In ~2.5 yrs, Lightning TCO is lower, 89.5% of the time.

This is one of my alts. On here I’ll try to stick to talking about automobiles, especially electric vehicles, their benefits, the struggles I have with them, the fun I have with them, etc.
