seems conspicuous that programmer commentary on genAI is split between

"oh yeah i use claude all the time now. the 10× programmer is real and he's me. i am a god"

and

"yeah my coworkers use claude all the time. they keep committing crap that doesn't work and now i spend half my time fixing it"

The “opposite” of a GPU is kinda weird.

Graphcore has a strange chip (IPU) that loves tiny batches...but is also massively parallel.

It used to cost ~$100k. Now you can get one on Ebay for $150 bucks.

The catch is it's almost impossible to use.

#rustlang hot take: We should rename .unwrap() to .or_panic(). (And .expect() to .or_panic_with().) "Unwrap" is a terrible name for the panicking function, especially since we also have things like .unwrap_or() and .unwrap_or_default() which never panic.

You’ve heard of the Unix 2038 Problem.

I bet you haven’t heard of the GPS 2038 problem.

Every GPS navigation device in existence experiences an integer overflow every 19.6 years.

Last time, it wiped out iPhones, NOAA weather buoys, and a number of flights in China:

Maybe use year? Or we need to start naming movements like architecture?

Discovering computer as an adult makes you go crazy. Discovering computer as a baby makes you go crazy. In all of human history, there will only ever be one generation to discover computer at the correct age: 13
The problem with every post-Millennial generation is they got to go straight to high speed internet. Of course you'll get computer madness that way. Make them start with those old screeching modems and work their way up

How do you program an unknown CPU?

The original specs are gone; no compilers exist, and the ISA is completely unrecognized.

It happens more often than you think, behind very closed doors.

It's almost always military hardware.

Gen Z doesn't Understand Filesystems. It's not their fault.

Apple's early abstraction of mobile data storage has caused...confusion to say the least.

But what does the *real* iOS filesystem look like?

As a researcher myself; it's kind of insanely complicated:
