Man at least palantir had some thin plausible deniability
In S.M. Stirling's Emberverse series the warlord who takes over post-apocalyptic Portland uses the Eye of Sauron as his emblem, which I really do think is a completely plausible bit of background detail.
Sauron is appearing on the scene as concerns rise about crime among the most wealthy.

The entire history of the Brandywine school is that fucking meme where a guy posts on a photo of a sculpture "only a white man could do this!!" and it was made by a Chinese woman. A bunch of art that shitheads use for purposes completely antithetical to the politics of its creators

See also the persistent anger among conservatives about seeing gay or interracial couples in TV commercials. The government doesn't decide what's on your TV, but to them "the government" is a parent-like concept that substitutes for anyone who runs anything in society

Something important to understand about me and where I'm coming from in life is that I see the works of JRR Tolkien as a short story about an elf called Fëanor with an epilogue that got wildly out of hand.
