Kindles will accept other mobi files transferred by cable, and I've personally used that option to stick fics I got from AO3 and converted via Calibre onto mine so I know it works.

(This should also apply to anything out of copyright on Gutenberg, Archive, or similar sites already in mobi format.)

The Oz books are a DELIGHT! Very whimsical and surprisingly queer for stories a century old (shouts out to Ozma BEGGING Dorothy to move in and rule alongside her). Plus, all the ones by L. Frank Baum are in the public domain so you can read them for free — with illustrations — on Gutenberg.org!
