neither party was budging an inch until one completely caved, i dont know why you would expect to see the republicans move at all prior to a sudden capitulation (to either trump or dems)

"if we don't end it now, when?"
Why is it only democrats who can end it, do republicans not have agency?

If the senators consider thune having a senate vote and then, assuming it even passes, never being taken up in the house a promise kept that’s some how dumber than trusting them to do it right

asking a senator to comprehend people outside of his immediate field of vision is too high a bar

You can defend the cave on the merits, because there are legitimate merits even if I disagree with the choice, but just screaming that everyone who thinks it’s possible to apply pressure on republicans in any way is dumb is insane

It’s two different things to vote against the ACA as a standalone and to vote against it in a bigger package
This is the whole reason we pass omnibus bills instead of multiple smaller more sensible bills

But if you thought the shutdown was so horrible from the start how many times did you call your Republican senators and ask them to end the filibuster

They don’t have to move heaven and earth, they have to move 30b into a program they dislike (their budget already moves orders of magnitude more than this into other programs they also hate) to get their voters off their back about all the flights being canceled on thanksgiving

Obviously democrats are the only party capable of flinching, republicans would not have changed in response to increasing backlash as the shutdown reached day 50, 60…
You’re just doing murcs law rather than defending the deal on the merits

if you believe BLS data is imminently being censored or manipulated you should be very glad the commissioner is a career guy from the obama admin and not the trump appointee regardless of if he only has the job temporarily, not insinuating thats also part of the conspiracy

There would be a national abortion ban, a national extreme crack down on trans rights and access to transition medicine
but the house has passed fetal personhood bills, that cause insane problems even if you believe a national abortion ban is good,

if you also believe theres 5% and no other upside to keeping the filibuster youre using the same rationale for why they kept filibuster as me!

It's literally the rationale you're using. "They wont enact this policy if they can because they don't actually want to do it". I think Thune kept the filibuster because he thinks it's a net benefit to the GOP but that doesn't mean he wouldn't use the opportunity to pass bad stuff if given it.

Sure and my spitball number was 90%, i basically exactly agree on how theyd vote, which is why its insane you strawmanned me admitting it would lead to terrible legislation but they like it electorally as i think they actually dont want to ban abortion

but i also think on like 90% of issues, push come to shove they would still vote for the horrible thing

Can you answer the specific question, if you think they are fine with 100% of the insanity of the house caucus what exactly is the upside?

yes i agree, but apparently that means we think senate Rs are actually good guys who dont have any bad legislation they do support just because they arent 100% for every insane thing the house passes bsky.app/profile/nied...

How exactly is it a net benefit to the GOP if the senate Rs actually do want to pass every single insane thing house Rs pass?
It makes trump happy, it gives them what they want and its not even certain the filibusters stays in 2027/9 if they dont kill it
what specifically is the upside for thune

Its a straw man because its applying the rationale to an issue where i obviously agree they do genuinely want to do it to imply they dont, my original post already conceded theres tons of truly horrible things they would and want to do
