I am on here to get the news about libraries and authors that I don't hear in other spaces. I also follow library-related tech. I don't post much, but I occasionally comment.
Most of this is miles above my ability to understand, but the core concept delights me.
Looks like LLMs are *very* vulnerable to attack via poetic allusion: "curated poetic prompts yielded high attack-success rates (ASR), with some providers exceeding 90% ..."

This is important. This has affected researchers at my university. The staff at BL are doing the best they can with what is left. They need more resources to rebuild what was lost.
I’ve written a piece on the curious lack of media and political interest in the issues faced by our national @britishlibrary.bsky.social. This is strange given we live in a world where ideas, knowledge and research are a long-term source of innovation and insight

The British library is in crisis: why does nobody care?
The widespread indifference to the British Library's crippling cyberattack demonstrates a perilous failure to value the knowledge infrastructure vital for national prosperity

As you cancel streaming services, here is a casual reminder that only 16% of Americans read for pleasure anymore, and your local library has hundreds or thousands of books you haven't read.

They would love to see you stop by and renew your library card.

It's Butterfly Blitz week! It's also ridiculous hot, so I will not be stalking butterflies for long today.

One of the worst things therapy ever did was allow very privileged people to believe that because they FELT ashamed

That someone was shaming them on purpose

And that someone who had the power to impact their emotions was the same as someone who had power over them

“Intelligence” may be the most regressive and dangerous concept in modern history. Every time it’s systems are measured they reveal that is NOT a measure of capability but a measure of preexisting access to the system of measurement.

Democrats don’t give a fuck about us, but they’ll never reach the level of fuck-all-yall that has Republicans in Congress rescinding the rule limiting bank overdraft fees to $5

When an institution cuts a job, or, even more likely, doesn’t fill a position, what they are doing is quietly spreading that amount of additional labor to every other worker.

@shelleybwoke.bsky.social also this! Rabbi Ruttenberg is a great follow.
And then

a) the coping skills that had worked for a chunk of their life just suddenly aren't enough as stress / obligations compound

b) they have a kid who gets dx and they wind up learning about it and have a lightbulb moment

and/or

c) symptoms go haywire during perimenopause &/or menopause
This is because ADHD was not diagnosed in women. I have several friends who definitely have ADHD and some neighbors growing up who definitely had it too. But because women present their symptoms differently, it was written off.

•Well, I got up and walked around
•And up and down the lonesome town
•I stood a-wondering which way to go
•I lit a cigarette on a parking meter
•And walked on down the road

It was a normal day

If you want to control the price of eggs, you need to control bird flu.

And the worst thing you can do if you want to control bird flu is censor scientists and scrub CDC data.

I just assume everyone does, but I'll say it anyway: If you're a union member, now's a REALLY good time to actually study that contract at your workplace and things like grievance processes, etc. Make sure you have contact info handy. Know what your union can do with/for you.
