We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right. Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases. In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing). These shiny technical “solutions” are just cover. What’s really happening is companies caving to government pressure to turn the web into a surveillance machine that tracks us at every turn.

The really short version of my answer is: it would only address the problematic issues from a technological perspective, but what we really have here is a political problem. There is this thing called Ranum's Law, named after Marcus Ranum, an early Innovator in the space of firewalls, and he wrote that "you can't fix social problems with software". Age verification is one of those technological / software fixes which say that they are doing one thing (protecting kids) whilst actually they are achieving something else (enumerating everyone who uses the web) - if you immediately fix on attempting to reduce risks of "enumeration" you end up ignoring: disenfranchisment of people who cannot age verify, political pressure to permit privacy-invading systems as well "in the name of market competition" and a race to the bottom for people's personal data. So ZKP is a wonderful technology when deployed in a controlled infrastructure and under centralised patch management to protect discrete and well described taxonomies of data… but it's never going to happen in the real world because that's not what people in power actually want. (Edit: plus: the data is a mess and there is also no taxonomy) What they actually want is: for their friends who have been lobbying them since 2016 or earlier to get a wad of money, and for the public to be placated enough about child safety that they get reelected. This is not a technical problem and it does not have a technical solution. What we are seeing here is the long tail of a moral panic."

Vi kan fortfarande ta tillbaka det offentliga samtalet.” Det som krävs menade Bali i texten var att “aldrig någonsin, någonstans, någon gång samarbeta med Sverigedemokraterna”. Ni vet alla vad som hände sen. Hanif Bali blev själv precis det han varnade för. Han blev profeten som hade förutsett sitt eget moraliska fall. Och Moderaterna valde några år senare att regeringssamarbeta med ett rasistiskt parti.

I moderaterna är det högre i tak än hos SD. Det Beckman nu sprider ledde till att en SD-riksdagsledamot petades. (Det handlar om en antisemitisk konspirationsteori som Beckman sprider gång på gång.)
