Watching @rosepaladin.bsky.social fight with OpenStack has been quite the experience. I think she knows where my last shreds of sanity went to now.

Hear me out, sneak one of these into your group's dice for D&D and see how long it takes for them to notice
I think cats discovered it first
A four-sided shape that will always come to rest on the same side no matter what side it starts on has been built by mathematicians, decades after it was first proposed to exist.

"Let's go throw a GPU in a server" she said, "It'll be quick she said". Now the air compressor is out, weird DIMM errors are popping up and @rosepaladin.bsky.social snuck an extra NIC in the replacement server. Two hours later, the GPU is finally installed.

"why not use [language model] for this" well you see I take some amount of pride in having stuff to say that can't be predicted by a statistical estimate

I taught a couple of cybersecurity merit badges to my daughter’s Girl Scouts troop and the parents were amazed that I made it so easy to understand for a bunch of 8 year olds

I pointed out that I had years of practice explaining the Internet to senior military officers, so this was a breeze

Hey folks,

I’m preparing to update my risk assessment map and I am including a new factor: hospitals complying with anti-trans EOs and whether AGs are putting pressure to stop that.

If your hospital system is complying with anti-trans EOs and hasn’t reversed course, let me know here or in DM.

They pulled an SF medic literally currently deployed to an active combat zone out and flew her back to the states to get separated, because she's trans.

Simply add another project. You will not regret another project.

In seriousness, now more than ever, control over our data and how it gets used is important. The on-ramp to being able to manage your own information is simpler than you'd expect and can even be fun.

Every so often I get the urge to lab something absolutely impractical and it usually ends years later with learning a new field. Or in a month with a bit less sanity. Anyway, my ebay history is filled with GPON gear. This can only end well.

If you know any military leaders — from junior NCOs to 4-star generals — probably a good time to reinforce the idea with them that their oath is to the Constitution, not the President, and certainly not the Secretary of Defense.

Three easy questions to figure out a cybersecurity person's actual competency on big issues:
- Can a hacker take down the US power grid?
- Is AI going to replace security analysts?
- What operating system should business computers be running?

I promise, you'll get 'em.

i think that the quality of discourse in the software industry would be a lot better off if programmers were a bit more willing to admit that sometimes we just do stuff because we *like* it, instead of because it's objectively good or bad.

This 1000x over. "Your C kills journalists" is a take I've heard uttered in full honesty. Heard similar against Rust. Maybe we can like or dislike a language without it being a moral stand? Software that works > The Platonic ideal of perfect code
it doesn't mean that i will necessarily trust the software those people are writing, but we don't have to have a big flame war of "Rust is a BAD LANGUAGE" versus "unsafe languages KILL BABIES". sometimes we just enjoy something and want to keep doing it!
