It never came up on the show, but Matt Groening said in an interview before Futurama came out that The Simpsons was still on the air in the year 3000 and fans were complaining that it's no longer as good as its first 500 seasons.

Itchy is a barber and Scratchy is the costumer. Itchy is using normal scissors and a comb. Itchy takes out a razor blade and swings it at Scratchy's head. Itchy kicks away Scratchy's severed head. Blood sprays out of Scratchy's neck stump like a fountain and Itchy dances around it.
