We must stand resolutely against political assassination and political violence of all kinds, and just as resolutely against everyone who exploits acts of violence as the pretext or excuse for political repression of political opponents.
Very, very bad stuff coming from leading right-wingers

Welcome to all my new bot followers. I am not sure how you all found me given how obscure I am. You at least spurred me to edit my profile to say something.

Donating to Wikipedia does basically nothing to change editing. Many of Wikipedias most active editors don't think people should donate either. What can spite Elon is when people get involved and edit for themselves.

This summer I took a @wikimedia.bsky.social course to help edit material prior to the election. I learned so much -- and Colleen McCoy wrote a lovely piece about my work. Check it out!

Connecting the past and present: Political scientist brings expertise to Wikipedia during election year
In the ever-evolving landscape of information, the need for accurate, well-sourced content has never been more critical, particularly in the midst of this U.S. election year. Fearful of the technic…

So the most British clergyman (and proto-academic) ever, our man John doesn't abandon his History of Northumberland. He's sitting on evidence that will change a key part of British history, but nope! Out of scope.

So what does he do? He footnotes it. A 173 PAGE LONG FOOTNOTE. 13/22

Trump being a felon might not stick as part of the first sentence. There is already a formal discussion (called a Request for Comment) to see if it should stay or not and many other politicians (including some ex-Presidents of other countries) don't have felon in their first sentence.
Sometimes I love Wikipedia.

Yes Elon is targeting Wikipedia in order to discredit it. But many MANY Wikipedians are just as skeptical about Wikimedia Foundation fundraising. Wikipedians revolted about the fundraising banners in Dec 2022. Editing is much better than donating.
he 𝘪𝘴 very dumb, but targeting institutions like wikipedia is strategic. authoritarian movements see sources of objectivity as a threat.
Regular reminder that Musk is really dumb.

The ability to fork (copy Wikipedia and then edit it) is a "feature not a bug". It being used in this way however is a splintering of the internet and dangerous for many Wikipedians. I'm curious what it'll mean for Russian Wikipedia given the large number of Russian speakers outside of Russia.
The Russian government copy pasted Wikipedia to a new site, censored the articles, then banned the original Wikipedia. Head of new Russian government Wikipedia is the old admin of real Russian Wikipedia

Russia Clones Wikipedia, Censors It, Bans Original
Ruviki is intended to be a more “trustworthy” source of information for Russians by editing out anything that makes the Russian government look bad.

Wikipedia uses a standard called "Notability" to decide whether or not something qualifies for an article. Notable is a term of art and doesn't mean the same as notable in the dictionary. Which is really confusing for people who find that their favorite influencer doesn't mean Wikipedia's standards.

News media is sometimes criticized for aspiring for having a view from nowhere. Wikipedia thinks of Neutrality a little differently en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiped...

If Wikipedia had been around during Copernicus' life, you'd have seen the idea that the Earth revolved around the sun in few articles. The articles for the Sun & Earth wouldn't have mentioned it because "reliable sources" favored the sun revolving around Earth and those are what Wikipedia follows.

Inspired by @molly.wiki & @depthsofwikipedia.bsky.social I'm going to try some "here's how Wikipedia works" content M-F. We'll see if anyone's interested.

Today's: Wikipedia cares about verifying info. This means readers must be able to check info & means that Wikipedia doesn't aim for truth. 1/3

@molly.wiki So one thing Wikipedia has taught me is around A/AA/AAA ratings for accessibility with web color use. The sign-up box for CN is A which means it's going to be hard for a lot of people. Thought you might be interested in this. If not sorry for offering an unasked for suggestion.

Form Wikimedia Executive Director Sue Gardner: It's hard to cast it as a power of the elites when you can go in and edit it.

An interesting hypothesis as to why Wikipedia hasn't successfully been dragged into the culture wars despite its cultural prominence.

Chief Product and Technology Officer of the Wikimedia Foundation Selena Decklemean relays a conversation she had with Taiwan Digital Minister who compared Wikipedia to fire. It can be really dangerous or helpful & needs to be managed carefully. I think this is an excellent metaphor for Wikipedia.
