I post this as part celebration and part warning--finding the right pen-ink-paper combinations is an incredible distraction. Creative, collaborative, consuming.

But the "just trying" can get real, real fast.

Here's to another year as a fountain pen person, may this one be a bit slower 😜
Campus network down?

No problem! I have my Surface, a hotspot, and there's a USB-c connector.

Except the connection is terrible. Can tech support help?

No, the network is down (priority!) and today's their holiday party.

No problem! Point the document camera at my screen. 😈

Rain in SoCal --> "cold"
(cold is anything below 70F)
"cold"--> time to be cozy

This weekend I made cookies and put an old TV in my fireplace.

Had to teach without slides today and I won't be getting any grading done.

If it stays down much longer I will have to use a PRINTED book for lecture prep 🤯

Waited until Thursday to write this week's work to-dos in my Hobonichi Weeks.

Shaky train handwriting, but got to check off a bunch of things at once.

Only a few days into using the Moterm zip cover for my planner/wallet combo, enjoying it so far!

If you miss the satisfying snap of closing a dumbphone, I highly recommend the Surface. Clapping that kickstand at the end of the workday hits so good.

Caught up with my check-off sheet. Filled in the 222 cat! And then day 250 got smudged, haha.

Also purchased next year's night book -- a daily A5 Sterling Ink planner. I don't really use the weeklies in the Cousin and sometimes need to write around the quotes. Now to patiently wait 4-6 weeks...

Mockingbirds are still my favorite.

Came around a corner hearing this racket, marveling at how realistic the mockingbird's imitation was. There WAS a hawk and he was not going to be left to chill in peace.

Started using fountain pens a year ago today.

I already had a journal but could only write comfortably for a few minutes at a time.

Someone who loves me also loves LAMY Al-Stars. To the pen order, I added a Hobonichi Weeks. Why not try the layout and paper?

Just to try, right?

When Tyche starts looking longingly out the window, you should go outside with her.

Mockingbirds are my new favorite.

Yesterday I heard (and watched!) one go through a ton of repertoire that included calls of hawks and crows.

This morning I saw one dive bombing a hawk having breakfast.

Shooed a pair of geese off before Macroeconomics yesterday only to find liquidy parting gifts outside the class door. Well played, Canada.

New Pen Day! Still trying to make this ink work..

De Atramentis document cyan is a nice color and waterproof but behaves poorly: flooding, skips, hard starts, clogging.

Previous attempts in <F> (Jinhao 10, Hongdian M2, Preppy) and <EF> (Jinhao 10, Safari). Hoping this Kakuno <EF> is the one 🤞

Day 💯!

(technically 2 days ago)

I graded from 11 AM to midnight yesterday then spent another few hours this morning collating mail merges.

Daily techo use (work + personal) and fountain pens are powering me through correspondence teaching and managing everything else.

A treble betrayal:

1. Multiple visitors in the house
2. Her hiding place rendered unusable (our crumpled bed sheets were tightly tucked in)
3. The vacuum was used

Treats have been deemed unacceptable as a remedy.

Woke up 2 hours too early 😔

Made pao de queijo and caught the train 🥰

Finished another first-level interview 🤪 and blasted/belted Queen all the way home.

I don't miss the trade disruptions but I did miss Trade Talks.
🗣TRADE TALKS IS BACK🗣

Chad Bown is back 'cause tariffs from the new president call for an emergency relaunch of the longstanding trade podcast.

In 2025 I'm attempting all the #hobonichi things cousin + weeks, but the primary goal is writing every day.

On Day 7, I realized that by Day 15 I'd have 50 weeks to go, totally doable. On Day 16 what I would be documenting really hit me.

I'm glad to have made it to Day 20. Marathon, not a sprint.

Each semester there are fun little last-minute improvements in my courses.

This Spring, my class set of poster markers received names.

Carl has a few conduct issues but is generally fun to have in class. Inez is very extra. They all live in a former chocolate box.
