The summer is winding down and I feel there may be a light at the end of my deep dark tunnel of caregiver burnout. Despite my exhaustion and extreme social withdrawal, there have been good things.

Is it weird that I miss the internet from the late 2000s and early 2010s? People were getting paid as bloggers, polaroid cameras were popular again, Instagram was full of pottery and people photographing their lunches, Etsy was full of real artists selling real stuff...
With the news about Audible and AI, I woke up today thinking about this anti-AI poem I wrote a while back:

I still haven't finished Veilguard, not because I don't love it (I do, very much) but because I know it'll be the last first time forever and that makes me sad. So I continue to teeter on the line before the final mission, dragging it out as long as possible.

the potatoes are coming up! I figure in a few months between the garlic, beets, potatoes, & onions I might have enough of a harvest to make one pot of borscht!

I appreciate the yeoman's work being put in on these play-by-plays - means I get the gist while being able to laugh instead of cry.
Watching CBC waiting for Carney to arrive. All of the experts are speaking of the United States as unstable, dictatorial, erratic, and basically treating the entire nation building as dealing with a mad king.

Seriously, it feels like we're worried Trump will order an execution live on TV.

Fuck Harry Potter, read literally anything by Frances Hardinge.

Especially the perfection that is A Face Like Glass.
Fuck Harry Potter, read the Isis trilogy by Monica Hughes.

16 yr old Olwen spent her entire life on uninhabited planet Isis with only her robot as companion, and has no idea how the harsh climate of the planet has changed her, but a settlement from Earth is coming, and Olwen's life will change.
Fuck Harry Potter

Go read the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovich

It gives the same Britishness, sense of history, and magical powers, but with a setting of detectives and mysteries, and the characters from marginalized backgrounds are fully developed, not just caricatures.

IMPORTANT NEWS BULLETIN!!!!

My beet seeds have germinated.
May 3, 2025 at 4:10 PM
Dethatching my dead lawn is brutal. I can not stop sweating.

crossed off another month on my seemingly endless countdown to retirement chart (only 72 to go!)
May 1, 2025 at 2:59 PM
I did everyone's taxes, and now I get to sit and watch old lady murder mysteries until bed time

So nice to wake up to good news for once!
April 29, 2025 at 12:54 PM
I voted on Easter, nothing I can do about any of it now so instead of worrying myself into fits I'm trying to focus on the fact that another one of my notoriously tempermental Bells of Ireland seeds has germinated and poked a tiny green sprout out of the soil.

did some dead aunt apartment cleaning, then came home and dove straight into garden and yardwork - got one new bed finally planted with zinnias, cosmos and feverfew, dethatched some of the lawn I killed (on purpose!), planted potatoes, beets, and onions.

My aged spine would like a word.

🌼Benefits of a Weedy Lawn🌼

♡ good for pollinating insects

♡ many weeds are medicinal and/or edible

♡ dandelions are for granting wishes!

♡ weeds tend to repel sociopathic individuals who lay on their bellies and trim their perfect lawn with tiny, tiny scissors.

I did something to my leg the other day, resulting in constant pain and making walking/sitting/lying down equally uncomfortable. It's slowly getting better, but it's soil delivery day today and I have garden beds to dig and eleventy billion things to plant, and I am extremely frustrated.

the constant low hum of noise in the office and the devil fluorescents above me are making me crazy today
April 23, 2025 at 7:29 PM
oh no my lily order has shipped, and I have two more dahlia orders on the way, and I still have to dig the new garden bed
April 22, 2025 at 11:18 PM
wow, back at work after 10 days off and yeah, I don't know if I'm going to last the 6 years until retirement
April 22, 2025 at 4:09 PM
am I feeling stompy and weepy and all the feelings because I have to go back to work tomorrow or is it because menopause countdown has reset once again?
April 21, 2025 at 8:02 PM
Waiting for the sun to come out so that I can do a little work outside on this, my last day of vacation. I have a comfortable cat snoozing on my lap and feel no sense of urgency.

everyone in our household voted today! The whole process, including walking to the polling station with my 92 year old father, was 15 minutes.
April 20, 2025 at 10:36 PM
trying yet another paska recipe, hopefully this time it comes out the way I imagine it! No raisins though, my baba always used them and that whole family loved them but I loathe the wrinkly little turds. Sorry Dad.

voting on Easter Sunday on our way to brunch just to make the conversation interesting!

It's a snuggly morning over here.
