Consumer confidence data is basically useless for markets/econ forecasting at this point. There is just no universe where periods when inflation was 5x as high, real income growth was deeply negative, or unemployment was more than 2x current were better than the current backdrop.

The US is not going to have hyperinflation if we don't raise taxes. We're not going to get shut out of global credit markets. Again, I'm glad Romney has, long belatedly, discovered religion on the merits of government revenue from the wealthy. But this is deeply unserious stuff.

Sometimes there are trade offs, but this zero-sum fixation is a poor and inaccurate model of public opinion. Lots of people are doing lots of different things over huge amounts of time. The idea that *at the margin* Van Hollen's activities with KAG *hurt* senate dems chances seems obviously wrong.
