On our new pathway, achieving universal electricity access by 2035 requires $23 billion of investment each year

Another $4 billion annually is needed to reach clean cooking for all by 2040

Together, this is less than 1% of total energy spending today 👉 iea.li/48HCQrL

China is the top import partner for most countries in the world—

Over the past two decades, China’s role in global trade has expanded substantially. It has become a central hub, particularly through growing relationships with many lower and middle-income countries.

Electricity use is set to grow strongly to run air conditioners, EVs & data centres

But geothermal offers clean power around-the-clock

When people talk about countries as “rich” or “poor”, they can mean many different things. But for researchers and policymakers, it helps to have a way to compare countries by income using clear criteria. 🧵

With a new all-time record in June (43 TWh), US 🇺🇸 solar power has now reached 192 TWh so far this year ☀️

That easily surpasses the 2021 TOTAL ANNUAL generation of 164 TWh and almost exceeds the 2022 total (205 TWh).

Between this and coal, I know who I would bet on.

And fast charging – which can serve a greater number of vehicles each day than slow chargers – continues to expand

Financing decisions for critical minerals face key market & economic uncertainties, despite the strong outlook for demand growth

Investment momentum for key minerals has weakened: spending grew by just 5% in 2024, down from an increase of 14% in 2023 👉 iea.li/3ImziAI

Electricity investments this year are set to be about 50% higher than the total amount being spent bringing oil, natural gas & coal to market – accounting for over half all energy investment

This signals the approach of a new Age of Electricity 👉 iea.li/43FIxCN

Child mortality rates have plummeted in the last 30 years in low-income countries, such as Ethiopia, Gambia, and Afghanistan.

And in most rich countries, too, child mortality has more than halved — progress that we rarely hear about.

On February 19th, a battery north of Austin had a high relief shift factor against overlapping constraints, leading to all-time-high prices that approached $30,000/MWh.

We walked through how to use Grid Status to monitor, track, and review these situations 🔌💡

Exploring extreme prices in ERCOT with Grid Status
On 2/19/2025 a single location in ERCOT experienced all-time-high prices. What happened, and was the local battery, Rabbit Hill, able to capitalize on these extreme prices?

Do tariffs / import quotas on solar panels help or hurt domestic jobs?

While they boost *manufacturing* jobs they tend to hurt total jobs. That's because most clean energy jobs are in deployment, installation, maintenance etc.

Do imports of cheap solar panel and other technologies help or hurt domestic jobs in clean energy?
Without a comparative advantage, cheaper energy imports often help domestic jobs.

Scenarios assessed by the IPCC that are consistent with 1.5°C with no or low overshoot have a very large range of gas use.

What this doesn't show if that the world uses a lot of gas, then it means it must use less of something else (e.g. coal or oil, or more CCS or CDR).

This is hard to show!

Whales are often touted for their large potential for carbon storage.

But looking at the data, I think their role is extremely small (although partly uncertain).

Bring back the whales! Just not as a climate solution.

Could whales be a solution to climate change? Probably only a very small one.
The numbers don’t live up to some of the hype.
