I think Hackman’s most underrated performance is in The Birdcage. Playing it so straight (ha!) let the comedy live. By the end you actually like his bigoted, unsympathetic Republican senator character. Just a joy to watch.

Thinking about David Lynch dying makes me think of R. Crumb in his documentary talking about the death of culture. Real, true, honest-to-god eccentricity like Lynch’s is so rare these days, let alone eccentricity paired with uncompromising artistic vision and integrity. What a loss. What a life.
