Long-delayed unemployment numbers for DC are out and the 6.2% unemployment rate is nearly a full percentage point higher than in December 2024 - showing clearly the toll that Trump's slashing of the federal workforce is having on DC.

Mayor Bowser's economic growth strategy has failed to reduce poverty. New Census data show an increase in DC's poverty rate to 17.3% in 2024 (from 14% in 2023) and a continued extreme racial wealth gap with Black DC residents having just 1/3 the median household income of white residents.

DC pays while the Commanders get to keep virtually all the money.

We are asking our Councilmembers to push for a deal in the best interest of residents, rather than giving in to pressure from the mayor, the Commanders, and federal officials to rush the process and spend DC taxpayer money unwisely.

Elected officials often want a mountain of evidence to invest in programs supporting low income residents, but they often swiftly enact business subsidies without solid research evidence they'll benefit DC and renew them with little oversight. Read more about this double standard in my blog below.
Mayor Bowser has said policies should be evaluated so we know what works.

But her proposed 2026 budget heavily invests in unproven and disproven economic development strategies, while cutting programs that research shows create healthy communities and a stronger economy.

House Republicans voted to take food assistance and healthcare away from low- and moderate-income DC residents and in the rest of the country to pay for tax cuts for the rich.
Today, the House approved a budget bill that included devastating cuts to programs like SNAP and Medicare, programs that tens of thousands of people in DC rely on every day. These plans would create new cuts and barriers that would have sustained effects on the District.

The mayor's economic agenda would give away more than $1b to the corporate class and double down on ineffective trickle down strategies, while harming tenants and workers.

Friends, the 700,000+ residents of DC have no senators to call. Please call yours and help us fight back against Congress's attempt to prevent us from spending our own local money how our elected officials chose to.
Act now: Stand up for D.C.'s budget!

Please take a few minutes to call Senate Democrats and ask them to allow D.C. to continue spending at already approved FY25 levels by voting against any CR that hurts the District.
