A hoard of over 1900 #Roman silver coins found at Falkirk (Scotland); equivalent to 10+ years pay for an ordinary soldier. The coins range in date from 83BC to AD230, & may have been part of a bribe paid by Rome to a chieftain north of the frontier to secure peace for a while 🏺AncientBlueSky

It is with crushing sadness that I share the news that Dr Kay Hartley, our mortarium extraordinaire, died last week at the age of 94.

I visited her the week before she passed, and I will forever cherish the memory of that visit. May she rest in peace and her legacy be continued.

Brexit hasn't been betrayed.

The British people have not been betrayed.

The betrayal was Brexit.

Once that is the established narrative, we can all go forward together.

In the workshop today I'm making replica Roman Tubuli, or box flue tiles, decorated with a roller stamp. It may seem odd that this decoration simply served the purpose of providing a key for the plaster that would be applied over the top once they were mounted in the walls.🏺#Archaeology

Yes, this picture really does feature in one of our publications! 19th-century British farmers used paintings of extraordinarily large farm animals to display their skills as breeders, acting as status symbols 🏺

Slightly damaged

Photographed in July 2024 at the moment of retrieval, a mere 2,000 years after it was lost

Will we find anything similar this year on #Durotriges25?

Let's hope so

This once-elegant copper-alloy mount, incised, moulded and pierced with tiny holes, came from a Romano-British pit in the Cotswolds. It was probably attached to a circular object, perhaps made of wood or leather. What could it have been?
