So: In 2017, Congress made this happen:

NIH: Proposed 22% cut --> 9% increase
NSF: Proposed 11% cut --> 4% increase
NOAA: Proposed 16% cut --> 4% increase

Obviously, 2025 is not 2017. A lot is diff now. But still:

💰 Congress, not WH, sets budgets.

📞 Public support & calls to Congress matter.

This week’s main story is about the budget and staffing cuts being made to public health agencies in the U.S. under RFK Jr.’s leadership, how those cuts will impact all of us, and some foolproof ideas for what scientists can do in the absence of totally superfluous stuff like, y’know, centrifuges.

This is utterly dystopian: Leaders who have dedicated their careers to making our country healthy are being forced to resign or--get this--be reassigned to work on reservations for the Indian Health Service. This is beyond insulting, it is sick: using Native Americans as punishment
In emails that began arriving late Monday, senior leaders across the Department of Health and Human Services were put on administrative leave and offered reassignment to remote locations at the Indian Health Service as other employees began receiving layoff notices.
