“I’m grateful for being here, for being able to think, for being able to see, for being able to taste, for appreciating love – for knowing that it exists in a world so rife with vulgarity, with brutality and violence, and yet love exists. I’m grateful to know that it exists.” —Maya Angelou

Happy New Year! One of my highlights was my lab planning a surprise birthday celebration for me. This birthday was a big one, and was complete with a USC sweatshirt saying “Best PI Ever”. I can’t express how grateful I am to be working with the best research lab members ever. @dornsife.usc.edu

We need to support early stage investigators. This is the greatest ROI the country can have. #NIH
NIH funding is like pizza 🍕. Usually, the NIH gives many researchers a slice of the pie, but this year they decided to just give a few researchers the whole pie. The data show that, disproportionately, early career researchers went hungry. We need Congress to stop NIH multi-year funding mandates.
A Trump administration change to how the National Institutes of Health awards grants has sharply reduced early-stage investigators’ odds of securing funding, new data from the agency show. Teamed up with @aniloza.bsky.social for this @statnews.com story

WAKE UP DEAD MAN, the latest Knives Out movie by Rian Johnson, was one of the best movies I’ve seen all year, and one of the most compelling depictions of faith in all of its best and worst in a mystery format. The cast was great and Josh O’Connor deserves an award for carrying this so well.👏👏👏👏👍🙏✝️

📣 @bryandjames.bsky.social is hiring a postdoc at @rushalzheimers.bsky.social. This work examines predictors and consequences of a timely #dementia diagnosis using CMS claims linked to cohort data. Could be great for an #hpss #statssky #episky #hspr #geronsky PhD student finishing up this year.
Risks and Benefits of Clinical Diagnosis Around the Time of Dementia Onset
Diagnostic delay in dementia is common in the U.S. Drivers of diagnostic delay are poorly understood, but appear related to misconceptions about dementia, stigma, concerns about autonomy, the nature of the diagnostic process, and provider-related ...

If PIs can be patient with GMs and POs, that would be great.
While the government was shut down, 379 NIH study section meetings (containing 24,380 grant applications) were postponed. NIH is committed to getting these reviewed, but please be patient and understanding with staff, as this is a complex and heavy lift.
