Skulls of pachycephalosaurids, generalized and only vaguely implied to specific species. The first two columns show the skulls of generalized pahcys in lateral (left) and dorsal (right) views, with some shading to make the domes pop a bit. Arrows indicate the direction and trajectory of dome growth in ontogeny. In some Stegocephale-Prenocephale-morph taxa, there are accessory domelets on the side, thse pop up last in ontogeny, and are shown by smaller, accessory arrows. The bottom row shows Dracorex, Stygimoloch, and Pachycephalosaurs as an ontogenetic series with similar arrows.

The trackmaker of Farlowichnus rapidus Leonardi et al., 2024 has found a prey, namely, a specimen of the Brasilichnium elusivum Leonardi, 1981c trackmaker, which had unwisely ventured out of its den. The scene is depicted as occurring under the moonlight, as the best tracks were likely impressed at night, when the substrate was slightly moist with dew. Art by Guilherme Gehr.

On the coast of Pliocene California, a Homotherium pounces upon a newborn Herpetocetus morrowi. These are Cetotheres, small baleen whales that thrived during the Miocene/Pliocene. For the sabertooth, such a tiny calf so close to shore is a rare treat. #paleoart #sciart #pliocene #california

I’m once again thinking of strange contrasts in the palaeoart of my childhood. These paintings, by Brian Franczak and Ely Kish, depict Albertosaurus and Daspletosaurus and have broadly similar compositions, but their approaches to restoring the dinosaurs are about as different as you could get.
A compact and robustly built Albertosaurus with green and black striped stalks through a vine-covered forest, turning to the side to reveal its long snout. The forest floor is densely carpeted by ferns, and several roots and logs are scattered about. A slim, almost emaciated Daspletosaurus strides alongside a narrow winding stream with sandy banks. A crocodile-like champsosaur splashes out of its way, splashing the clear blue water in its panic. Reedy vegetation flanks part of the stream, and thick trunks dominate the right part of the scene.
