Yves Tanguy (1900-55) is one of those rare artists who walked into art almost “off the street.” And that’s barely a metaphor. In the early 1920s he drifted through Paris after serving as a sailor, changing jobs, living impulsively — until one day he saw a painting by Giorgio de Chirico.

He stopped, stared, and understood that his life had just been rerouted. Not through years of training, or academic apprenticeships — instantly, like a switch being flipped. Tanguy began to paint as if some internal mechanism had suddenly unlocked. A self-taught artist, but never a “naïve” one. His style emerged fully formed: landscapes that don’t exist on Earth, objects that look half-organic, half-mechanical, and horizons stretching past any familiar world. The Surrealists recognized him as a phenomenon. He joined André Breton’s circle, took part in exhibitions, lived the bohemian rhythm of Paris. He was fearless. He painted his deserted, hypnotic worlds with the calm confidence of someone who visited them each night. What set Tanguy apart from other Surrealists was his sense of order. Not the order of reality, but an alien logic — precise, strange, and absolutely coherent within itself. His forms seem to study one another; his landscapes feel as if they’re slowly shifting; his compositions assemble into a system that has no name. His canvases aren’t just visions — they’re territories. His personal life became legend. His relationship with the artist Kay Sage was a partnership built on equal intensity: art not as a pastime but as oxygen. They emigrated to the US, survived the war, built a studio that became their shared laboratory of imagination. Sage was his anchor, his counterpart, his person — their story is both beautiful and painfully human. Tanguy died young, but left behind a body of work that feels like an opened doorway into another dimension. His paintings remain contemporary precisely because he never aimed to imitate reality. He created a new one. Tanguy is the artist who proved that the gates of art aren’t guarded. They open for those brave enough to step into places the rest of us would never dare to go. We had a candidate who was very tall and had great hair, but some of the board was hesitating because he was a giraffe. While the candidate’s towering stature and enviable hair made a strong initial impression, I failed to adequately account for his species-specific limitations, particularly his lack of business acumen, human language fluency, and capacity for boardroom strategy beyond “find tree, eat leaves.”
