One of my tabs has been playing some sort of lo fi music at me for a few days now and I have given up trying to find it. I guess this is how I live now.

Quick PSA: canceling your NYT sub is not at all the dark pattern nightmare that you might’ve read about in the past. Also The Verge is great for deals if you were using Wirecutter before - several of the contributors now write for The Verge.

Did you know Bolts has a *state-by-state* guide to all state supreme courts?? Not just how justices are selected, and what powers they have...

... but also what we know about the composition of each court!

It's all crucial to know right now, so bookmark: boltsmag.org/whats-on-the...

This is a wonderful piece on the central moral question about generative AI as the operationalization of the digital commons from @robinsloan.com (read Moonbound, it’s so good!): www.robinsloan.com/lab/is-it-ok...

The sink hole in the north parking lot is not a portal to Hell. That’s ridiculous. It is just really deep and that’s why no one ever comes back.

Just in time for me finally giving up on lugging paper books around when traveling.
Amazon's changing the way the Kindle works on Tuesday, so if you want to download and de-DRM your books, you have until the 26th to get it done. I wrote a quick how-to, for anyone who is interested: next.content.town/p/kindle-drm...
The Kindle DRM Deadline is Approaching!
On the 26th, Amazon is disabling a feature that makes backing up your Kindle eBooks easy. You have a couple of days to download them before it’s too late

This helps, is helping this week. Follow this advice.
Another thing re antidotes... the people you love, who you value... be in the moment with them. Not distracted, not on your phone, but fully present. Open to them. So you can see them and be seen. This feels even more important right now.
Destabilization of reality in the US is about to reach surreal heights. Protect your mind. Monitor stress levels. Do not doomscroll--it does not help. Be selective about when and how long you expose your brain to this. Do what you can when you can.

TIL that the Internet Archive does an end of term crawl of government websites. This time’s is probably worth downloading.
The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. This effort's housed by a donation-funded nonprofit, not a branch of the US government. blog.archive.org/2024/05/08/e...

This is either a stupid bug or deliberate, but either would be reason enough to delete your account.
For anyone deleting X. Look at this.

The UI was tweaked to shift the clickable area of the deactivate button a few cm away from the actual "Deactivate" text.
