I really loved this ritual. Nothing has come along to replace it.
Literally the best part of visiting a decent-sized American city for a long weekend was finding their free news weekly (or 2!) on a wire rack in the entry of the first bar/restaurant you walked into
my most Gen X coded belief is that cities and the culture at large suffer profoundly for the near-complete death of alt-weeklies
