The “artist exception” point-counterpoint on this one is pretty clear: Dolly Parton vs JK Rowling. Rowling used to actively avoid being a billionaire- as soon as she stopped, she became publicly monstrous. Dolly Parton has simply spent her entire life literally sharing the wealth.
nope, no exceptions - no human being needs a billion dollars

Opinions please #writingcommunity! I'm 8,000 words into my new novel and am now wondering whether it should be written in past tense or present. It's currently past, but maybe present works better? What do you prefer? I know it's ultimately up to me, but both work!

Starting a new novel at a time when being a writer is difficult (AI, the apparent need to have lots of followers, other such issues) can be disheartening. But I've found the best way to approach this is to write as if this novel won't ever see the light of day anyway.

New book day! Excited to jump into a new novella-in-flash: Aerth by Deborah Tomkins, which recently won the Weatherglass Novella Prize.

Everyone believes they will be the exception. That chronic illness, homelessness or tragedy won’t befall them.

We can’t all be the exception. Life can change in an instant, and most will experience tragedy at some point in their lives.

We should all fight for better social supports & safety nets

Have reached the natural stopping point in my wild draft/plot plan. I need to be *officially* writing it, but in order to let it consume my soul I need to finish my current WIP.

But I LOVE this bizarre book idea and its characters. They're taking over my thoughts. Send help.

Sitting like miniature residences between the headstones, these doll’s house graves are a striking example of non-traditional funerary art and changing ideas of grief, innocence, personalisation an…

Currently reading through my novella-in-flash and I must have read these stories a thousand times, yet I'm STILL finding ways to tweak and improve them. Thankfully editing is my favourite part of the process, but will it ever end?! #writingcommunity #flashfiction

We are disappointed but not surprised that Meta has used millions of pirated books to develop its AI systems.

As a matter of urgency, Meta needs to compensate the rightsholders of all the works it has been exploiting.

But what can authors do? Read here:

Sometimes you just want to look at a lovely picture of a 16th century shipwreck.

Of course, it's better in person... 😉

At the start of this year, I had no idea that I'd end up not only plotting a whole new book, but working on a really rough draft too. (Well it's less of a proper first draft and more of an extended plan with scenes and notes, but I'm happy.)

I have @writershq.bsky.social to thank/blame for this.

Recently discovered that Camberwick Green is on Prime. It was before my time, but I love 1950s-60s children's media, particularly puppet shows. So I'm currently watching puppets fret over having no milk in the village for one day. It's all kicking off.

Very quaint and soothing though.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. #1614:
Not all writing happens at a desk. If you're feeling stale, feed your mind - go for a walk, read a book, talk to someone, do something new. You don't find inspiration in looking at a screen all day...
