It’s .NET 10 day.

Which means you have a year to move your apps off .NET 9 and .NET 8 which will both go out of support in one year.

When you try to predict about the impact of AI tools on software engineering - a great analogy I heard from @simonwillison.net is to look at the impact of smartphones (+ the amazing cameras they have) on filmmaking.

Noticed that those able to shoot pro films using a smartphone are... pros?

It’s cringe to see successful companies that have nothing to do with AI rebrand themselves as “an AI platform” because they think it will somehow help them.

Workday is a HR platform.

Sure, they added AI features like everyone else but it was never “built with AI at the core”

NEW: CloudFlare says it detected Perplexity scraping and crawling websites that explicitly block it from scraping them.

Based on customers' complaints and its own experiments, the company says Perplexity is using "stealth" bots and changing its bots "user agent" to circumvent restrictions.

The reality of offering “unlimited” plans for any service where the provider has costs based on usage.

There will always be users who abuse it in ways the provider doesn’t expect it (at least at first).

For AI, generating tokens costs $$. So “unlimited” is either subsidized or removed:

People asking questions on Stack Overflow has declined to levels not seen in 15 years. Vibe coding and AI chat bots have made this once vibrant and essential developer community obsolete.

It’s unsurprising its parent company now wants to rebrand away from Stack Overflow.

As a dev, do you ever look forward to being woken up at 2am by an oncall alert?

I HATED it.

So why has no startup looked into building an AI agent that attempts to do basic mitigation, making for smoother oncall?

The first "startup" that is doing it is... Microsoft:

Honestly I learned the most (and became a much better dev) when I reinvented the wheel.

Built a (simple) ORM instead of just using NHibernate (was a mistake.) Implemented own sorting algo thinking it would do better than built in (it did not.) Built own charting library. Etc

All were worth it!!
It's good to reinvent the wheel sometimes!

Great post by Matthias Endler.

It helps understanding how wheels work, how you can fix them when broken, how to make better wheels if really needed, or how to find creative use cases for wheels by thinking outside the box.
