In Natasha Schüll’s book Addiction By Design, she draws on research positing a gendered distinction btwn “action gambling” (men) and “escape gambling” (women), which fits neatly with gender norms. She ties this “feminine” preference for escapism to the explosion in video poker/slots since the ‘80s.
