Taking into account the risk of going too hippy-dippy, our social predicament does not understand long time well.

The tree here has lived for a longer time than it took for us to industrialise. We mostly destroyed forest continuity while growing the economy.

Nowhere in nature do finches encounter food sources like this: highly concentrated piles of seeds & droppings, stewing in moist gunk for days, weeks, months, attracting multiple species in very close proximity. This is pathogen porridge. In nature, seeds scatter thinly and are available briefly.

Didactic video featuring two species which have declined catastrophically due to disease transfer at feeding stations. Birds infected with Trichomonas struggle to eat and will drop food items from their beaks, which are then eaten by healthy birds, hence RSPB no longer sells table feeders #UKBirding

In the early hours of this morning, following 119.6mm of rainfall in 12hrs, the River Monnow burst its banks and flooded Monmouth. The usual river level is just under 2m, this morning it was 6.63m- even higher than the record-breaking level during the floods in 2020 (6.57m). Absolutely devastating.

My Letter in @science.org on the need to align wildfire prevention with conservation.
The wildfires occurred in Spain in 2025 have fueled policies prioritizing shrub removal as a strategy, which would undermine the EU's long-term biodiversity conservation goals.

Lamentable.

This is the dominant land use in the south, with only a few fragmented old-growth forests left. Most rivers do not support original ecosystems with salmonid fish and insects.
