Sure, I do sometimes turn a modest profit at cons. Is it worth the 12 hours shifts for 4 days in a row including setup and packing?

Probably not.

On top of that, if I didn't have a FT Job, I couldn't afford the UPFRONT costs...production, storage solutions, transport/food...

Many full time creatives have “invisible safety nets” like bread-winning partners, trust funds, external support, etc. No shame on anyone, but it creates a false vision of success. The cost of going to cons alone on top of hoping to eat as a freelancer are untenable, IMO.

When people hear that I'm returning to part time work they often ask "are things not going well with your art?"

The problem really is things are going well, but the world is so unstable that I long for some consistency and income that I don't have to pay quarterly taxes on

My OC Noel and Julian. They are posing for a Photoshoot in front of a night city-scape. Plants Focus are surrounding them. Noel sits leisurely on a chair resting his chin on one hand meanwhile Julian stands on the left side beside him and rests his hands on his shoulders and holds up Noel's tie. Both wear suits. Julian smiles and Noel looks at the viewer neutrally. The whole illustration is made up like a magazine cover, so there is text surrounding them. The magazine title is "OC Style". The issue is 69. The magazine claims to be "The last word in OC Yapping". The title story is about "Noel Sturm - A driving force in medical informatics". Other articles seem to delve into the following: "Fashion? His boyfriend decides" "Julian Sommer-Rodrigues - Healthy and fit" "Hidden thoughts" "Secrets to when their story starts" "Campus stories" The whole artwork is drawn and designed by Lancha (lancha.bsky.social" - Do not use for AI training. Me on an hourly basis

i feel like this is such a me problem, but i can never really work on art at home...there are so many other things i could be doing...like gaming or watching tv or reading or doom scrolling.....

so i tend to work better when i spend money on overpriced coffee at a cafe or sth
