SO. The front door was beside the stairs but there was a wall protruding that made reaching around to do that impossible. There was an embedded door mat I could stand on and swing my son round (caught on stairs by his dad), but I couldn’t do that.

Climbed up a leaning ladder into a narrow second floor window because I didn’t want to wait in my car for three hours. (The wooden floor had been sanded and varnished, I couldn’t make the jump across from the front door mat to the stairs, so I went in through the window).
