Hi all! I'm Simon, an XR game programmer from Malta 🇲🇹 and currently based in Sweden 🇸🇪!
Professionally, I'm into ethical game AI, procedural content generation, and computational creativity.
Outside of work, I'm into games, folklore, music, tabletop RPGs, film, writing, and making ice-cream.
After so much time, blood, sweat, and tears poured into the game, we finally launched @battlemarked.bsky.social yesterday!

I'm a massive fan of D&D and TTRPGs so it was an honour and a privilege to work with an IP so close to my heart.

I hope players enjoy the game as much as we enjoyed making it!

Having a kid and interacting with many Swedish parents here has made me so grateful for how patient people can be with my not-so-great Swedish.

Even if I struggle or codeswitch to English if I don't know a word, people will gladly continue to speak Swedish to me if I initiated in Swedish.

I don’t talk about it much because the situation doesn’t really change but it’s still insane to me what an enormous amount of really talented game developers are out of work. just whole studios worth of incredible people, often people who worked on beloved games, unemployed.

Ask me anything! Curious about life in Stockholm (or Malta, UK, or Denmark?) What it's like working working as a gamedev? Parenting life in Sweden? Something about books/games/music/RPGs/film/ice-cream? Wanna learn more about me, hopes and dreams, fears and regrets, or affirmations?

Ask away!

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

If you only take the big names as your inspiration you will inevitably be disappointed. There is no career path in games that involves only making big-time successes. Please find inspiration from making work you enjoy and, ideally, uplifting those who DON'T get attention. Many people could use it

I moved from Malta to Denmark in 2011 for my MSc in Game Technology at @itu.dk. I had an amazing time, met a bunch of awesome people in the Copenhagen games scene, and graduated in 2013. Super happy to see the university celebrate its 25th year in games research!
What have we learned after 25 years of games research and education at ITU? Associate Professors @hwirman.bsky.social and Pawel Grabarczyk share their thoughts 👇

Also, please come celebrate the anniversary with us on 26-27 August! 🥂🥳

Back in Stockholm, and back to my regular routine on parental leave. You can see a snippet of my trip back home in Malta in the quoted thread.

Found a poor lizard trapped in our carpet this morning. No idea how they got there, but they're now living their best life away from purple carpets.

This might be familiar to anyone in the game AI space, or anyone who's played Creatures 2!

Almost got run over by a car today... I was crossing an empty road when a car comes hurtling round the corner, almost knocks me over and speeds up the hill, swearing at me for simply existing

I've been so hesitant to rent a car while in Malta because of how much more dangerous the roads have become

I am sitting at the National Library of Malta with unpublished manuscripts for a project I'm working on at the moment, and I'm practically vibrating with excitement. Can't wait to look through them!

No photos allowed here, so you'll have to take my word for it.

I'm literally sitting in the National Library of Malta looking through old books and manuscripts as I type this. None of which AI has access to.
AI will never locate a new archive. It will never uncover a new source. It will never find a small, privately held collection of papers that can upend what we think we know about the past. It can never work with undigitized sources. It can never do real oral history or ethnography.
AI can only replace historians in the sense that it can spit out mediocre, plagiarized narrative that vaguely resembles history. It will never replace *good* historians. Unfortunately, many university presidents and CEOs don’t seem to care about the quality of work being done, only the quantity- 1/2

I know I keep on banging on about this, but the stifling of access to online archives is hugely in the interests of OpenAI et al. Many people already rely on chatgpt as a search engine but its only going to get worse if other sources are suppressed

I thought I'd try an experiment, so I made imqaret ice-cream this weekend! Imqaret are a Maltese street food/dessert consisting of fried date pastries. I took the date filling and turned it into an ice-cream. It certainly has potential!

Today, on Sweden's national day, we went to the Stockholm City Hall to join 6900 brand new citizens and celebrate becoming Swedish in an afternoon of speeches, music, and fika. We were even given free museum tickets and a kid's book about nature for our son!

Proud to be dual Maltese-Swedish! 🇲🇹🇸🇪

There are many reasons why AI slop has become the aesthetic of current digital fascism, but one may lie in the competitive and selective logic of AI training itself: GenAI amplifies the presence of those who are already highly visible – while rendering invisible those who are already marginalized

I don't have as much time to make ice-cream anymore with a toddler on the loose in the house, but everything lined up this weekend so I could make homemade strawberry ice-cream! 🍓🍦
