This entire "the Dems need to abandon identity and focus on economics!" discourse is being driven by rich assholes who would melt down at the slightest hint of higher taxes on the wealthy or more welfare for the poor. Look how they're treating Mamdani! It's cynical bullshit all the way down.

Notice npr calls it a "pro democracy protest" while the New York Times headline says the protests "oppose Trump". NYT being fascism apologists again shouldn't surprise me, yet it does...

A sign of the times

Have you been noticing lately when having conversations with your friends, at some point the conversation takes a turn like this: “I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but…”

Conservatives love to darkly say stuff like “you aren’t prepared for what’s next, we’re not going to be moderate anymore, you have no idea what you’ve unleashed” and then cry like babies when you call them fascists

i’ve read like three dozen columns at this point where the basic thesis is “debating politics is good, but shooting people? shooting people is bad”

The challenge to endure “difficult” ideas and speakers only extends in one direction. The pleas to tone down political violence only benefit one side. And it’s the side that is most violent toward marginalized people, which is granted bipartisan approval and protection

what ezra doesn't seem willing to accept is that charlie kirk was part of a political movement that does not think that "we are going to have to live here with each other" and is fact very interested in the elimination and/or subjugation of many, many people
"All I can say for me in the work I do is that I want to create a space that takes our disagreements seriously, that takes the stakes of them seriously, the consequences for people seriously, but does so without deepening our divisions irreparably. We are going to have to live here with each other"

The free speech activist who built a list of professors he worked to get fired for their speech must be celebrated for his support of free speech, and anyone who quotes his speech accurately in context will be fired and/or face state punishment by the champions of free speech, do I have that right?

the modern political right in america does not in any way operate or function in good faith. it is all about securing the most power and being as ideologically manipulative as possible. like sartre's anti-semites who enjoy the "right to play," you cannot embarrass them with their own hypocrisy.

It's worth asking why every elite institution is issuing statements like this rather than pointing out the obvious fact that the institutional right commits and glorifies violence far more than the left. Is there a reason you feel you can't say that out loud?

you cant deter crime thru relentless force. the longer it’s applied, the more visible errors accrue & the more citizens feel occupied. distrust in authority dissolves cooperation and you can’t solve crimes without citizens’ help. when police are a community’s enemy solving crime there is impossible.

refusing to accept this isn’t just about “purity” or whatever, it’s about effective politics. someone who thinks it’s practical to cave on trans rights misunderstands how politics works, they don’t recognize that public opinion is forged by perseverance
Gavin Newsom suggesting that 25 years of age is too young to transition and agreeing to right-wing entryism of concern trolling about trans people in sports. This is your opposition leader?

I will never vote for Gavin Newsom anyone who thinks trans people are actual humans will follow suit.
