Lots of new connections recently -- some familiar faces and also some new ones, which is nice.

For those who don't know me: hi! I spent several years writing a graduate thesis on Frankenstein adaptations (I am slow). Please enjoy a picture of Boris Karloff drinking tea. 1/🧵

With so many Americans looking for closer-to-home destinations (and Canadians trying the avoid the U.S. altogether), there's never been a better time to discover Nova Scotia:

Here’s the bottom line for what’s going on with Grok - if the owner of the website is putting his thumb on the scale hard enough for the chatbot to turn into Goebbels, you should be deeply concerned about what he’s doing to the algorithm that you can’t so easily see, and what it’s doing to you

lol this is the most nothingburger scaremongering I've seen in a while. The "danger" was a follower DM'd to say "oh, hey I'm on this beach too."

My favourite Mariposa Folk Fest moments are when absolute legends act like shy little nobodies on stage. Ron Sexsmith did not disappoint in this regard:

Just saw someone cheering on a rise in meat prices, claiming it’s because they’re a vegetarian and they think meat should be a luxury.

This is classist and (anti-indigenous) racist bullshit.

Eating meat is a part of a lot of indigenous people’s cultural practices.

Rising food prices kill people.

State department guidance is now up for transgender people who want to change their gender marker on their passports.

Your window opens NOW to make it happen, with some caveats: data will be collected on changes.

EITM was the first media outlet to report this breaking development for trans people.

Finally watched Juror #2. A decent thriller with believable, grounded stakes.

The fact that it was so critically acclaimed really drives home how low the standards are now for basic screenwriting quality.

Whenever I travel I end up watching '90s live action family movies like Alaska and Fly Away Home. These are never "acclaimed"--sometimes downright derided by critics. But they're always a poignant reminder of the standard we once had for Hollywood writing that just doesn't exist anymore.

Galaxy Quest is the correct answer, although I would also accept Toy Story.

Sidenote: is it weird that I think Tim Allen is extremely hot? He's got a certain "bigot Dad" energy I find irresistible.
