Sierra Johnson, 36, never got to read the story we wrote about her, in which she spoke up for the roughly 1,600 women who sued New York State in 2023 alleging they were sexually assaulted in state prisons.

This version of the NYT feels so far away. ALSO, I had no idea Gingrich was responsible for the dissolution of one of my favorite agencies (and the author of the report screenshotted in my cover photo)
The path to our reality-denying authoritarian moment has many origins, but was thinking today abt how long we’ve been on this path.

In particular, was thinking abt how one of Gingrich’s first acts upon taking over the House for the first time in a generation was to gut all its expert institutions.
Gingrich and the Destruction of Congressional Expertise
A decline in the ability of Congressional staffs to provide independent research can be traced to Newt Gingrich’s tenure as speaker, and his recent call to abolish the Congressional Budget Office has ...

Obviously I don’t expect anything from our bigoted and pathetic mayor, but I’m gonna need more from the NYCDOE than “deeply disappointed.” Your only job is to protect and educate students, and if you’re not committed to doing so, then step down.

Basically, their effort to portray Autism as preventable and curable is part of a larger project to eliminate anyone they see as costing society more than they contribute. And, short of that, to push those costs fully onto families and off of the state.

This is insane, @mta.info.

A white woman gets on a Metro-North, tells a Black man to sit differently, then complains to the conductor when he says no.

That’s bad.

But then the conductor CALLS THE COPS. On the MAN. For not changing how he was SITTING.

That’s inexcusable, @mta.info.

Moskowitz threatened my job when I refused to mail a threatening and confusing “expulsion” letter to a student with an IEP. Money and power are secondary to the humanity of her majority Black and low-income students. But I should thank her for leading me to the best job I ever had (at NYCDOE D79).
The founder of Success Academy, NYC's largest network of charter schools, admonished several hundred employees during an “emergency meeting” for failing to lobby elected officials in sufficient numbers ahead of a march over the Brooklyn Bridge: https://bit.ly/4poYRSJ

8 Democrats just joined Republicans in voting to enable 14-year-olds in DC to be tried as adults:

Gillen
Golden
Lee (NV)
Min
Perez

Dinesh D’Souza’s demented son-in-law, himself a conspiracy theorist, who: 1) called for the deportation of Ilhan Omar, 2) cheered on murderer Daniel Penny, and 3) told Zohran Mamdani to “go back to the Third World” apparently hasn’t exhausted his capacity for evil. May he never know peace.
Also under consideration: HR-5140.
Current DC law generally treats individuals under 18 as juveniles, with some exceptions at age 15+.
This bill would lower the age to 14 for trying minors as adults in certain serious criminal cases.
