I always thought Plato was pretty pollyannaish on this point, but this is decent evidence for the view that a man of bad character will therefore be unhappy even with every external trapping of success and good fortune.

Today, the SF Board of Supervisors approved an upzoning law that will incentivize demolition of thousands of rent controlled homes. Supervisors Chan, Chen, Fielder & Walton supported an amendment to exempt rent controlled buildings but were outvoted by other supervisors.
