I don't know where I thought this story was going but gravedigging hell yeah.
This is a good omen, my love, but I still have much work left. My darling, you are in the backseat of the sedan. Your body, what’s left of it, is wrapped snugly in the emerald velvet blanket. I pull you from the car. Even in the thick blanket, you are so very light. This breaks my heart anew. In life, the weight of you in my arms, the weight of you when you held me against your body, was home. Even if this works, neither of us will walk away whole. Getting you out of the ground was hell. I worked under moonlight to excavate the hard frozen soil of Evergreen Cemetery. My labor took days. Before dawn each morning, I had to cover my progress with snow, snow that I would then have to remove before I continued my task as the sun settled behind the mountain ridge that encompasses the village like the dorsal spines of a great leviathan. Your father buried you within sight of the Memorial to the Unborn, that ghastly faux-marble statue of an implausibly muscular Christ with accusatory eyes set on three women bowed at his feet. All four faces were sunken like melted wax. One of these women stared at me while I dug into the earth. Her eyes were not ashamed, or judgmental, or even uneasy like her sisters. No, somehow the sculptor had made her eyes look frantic, hopeful, as though she urged us to our escape.
