tell 'em, Liz.

and also me. i'll tell 'em. CREDIT YOUR OUTSOURCED LOC TEAMS. they do work that is the equal of in-house loc staff and often under even worse conditions.
This includes voice actors and outsourced localizers, btw! #TranslatorsintheCredits
(Looking at you, "Tales of" series, for leaving these people out of the credits despite reporting that 70% of players now come from overseas: bsky.app/profile/lizb...)
Everyone who worked on a video game needs to be in the credits:

The thing thats so insidious about using AI this way is that one of the main ways artists get hired are studios looking for art references and they find us and reach out.

This is removing a major avenue to get work if they can just generate nameless derivations of our ideas.

I wrote more words about how it feels to be a translator watching the games press report on AI and labor, coming from a field that's fought these battles for decades. It may look like I'm beating up on one outlet, but it's not about them; I've been trying to write this for me and my peers all year.
You Can't Report on Hunger While Taking Bread Off the Table
On the proliferation of machine translation in video game outlets covering the effects of AI on labor.

SIGNALIS was released 3 years ago today.

It still feels like a dream that people still play,
discuss and create fanart of our game today ✨

Thank you for your support throughout the years!

Picture this exact scenario, but it started happening a decade ago and now every agency you work with won't shut up about you taking more time for less pay to correct their magic machine's mistakes and you'll have just the slightest idea what your games' localizers have put up with this whole time.

I'm just saying, the more As you put on any game I work on, the less kindly I'm gonna take to you haggling my rates and the louder I'm gonna be about asking where the royalties are for me and my colleagues if it goes on to sell the sorts of gangbusters your accountants have predicted lol

Character voice in localization is something that seems so minor but it's also super important. The differences between "Wait a sec," "Wait a minute," and "Wait a moment." might feel pedantic but it's the kind of thing you really need to consider on a per-character basis.

LRP: Even the fuzzy matches of tools like MemoQ can cause problems. I was looking over another team’s work and, after a character broke down in tears over the deaths she caused, the MC’s grim and determined “行こう” was auto-loc’d into “Let’s do this!”

AI hurts your product. Let professionals work.

This is really awesome! But did you know that this highly beloved game's out-sourced English translators were never credited for their work? The translation is attributed only to the company "Inbound Games". Credit the people who work on your game! #TranslatorsInTheCredits

Despite being available in 11 languages, the game doesn't feature any #TranslatorsInTheCredits and only includes Lionbridge Games.

Suikoden's PS1 localizers were never credited, and now nearly 30 years later, neither are the ones who worked on the HD Remaster. As Patrick Dowling put it in 1998: "A properly localized game is as much their product as it is the developers'." Credit the people who work on your game!

Reminder: Astro Bot didn't credit their translators, who made their game available in 28 languages.

In the credits, they're given a "thank you". That's all.

Would you do that for your dev team? Your graphics team? Your marketing or sales team?

Shame on you, Sony. #TranslatorsInTheCredits
